By late 1964, the Everly Brothers were in the odd position of having a long-term major-label recording contract that still had years to run, but having become passé as a recording act. Their commercial eclipse had begun by the start of 1963, and it was made even darker by the onset of the British Invasion a year later. Babbie Green is a modern-day troubadour who delivers musical messages about life's sights and scenes. Babbie Green is the daughter of Johnny Green, whose achievements include participating in the composing of one of the most recorded popular songs in history, "Body and Soul." But unlike the minstrels of yore and her father's songs, Green writes and sings, sometimes with help, about the trials and tribulations of a more complex turn-of-the-century society and those who experience them. These conditions are dealt with by a variety of songs done in a number of rhythms and tempos performed on a two-CD set by Babbie Green on piano and vocals, often helped by Laurie McIntosh and/or Kirsten Benton. Little Milton's 1953-1954 Sun sessions, and his 1958-1961 stay at Bobbin Records, comprised virtually everything he recorded in his early career prior to joining Chess. This collection doesn't gather every last bit he did for Sun and Bobbin, and doesn't have anything from his two mid-'50s singles for Meteor. But it's still the best compilation of his pre-Chess material ever done, the 27 songs split almost in half between his Sun and Bobbin output. Compiling the Room's second album and an earlier EP, In Evil Hour/Clear! is a fine addendum to the No Dream best-of also released by LTM earlier in 2004. By the time of In Evil Hour the Room had hit upon the blend of rushed passion and inspired playing that made them perhaps the great also-ran band in early-'80s U.K. post-punk terms; it's little surprise that the album begins in spectacular fashion with "A Shirt of Fire," Dave Jackson's strong, keening voice swooping across the energetic jump-and-chime of the band. Paul Cavanagh isn't necessarily a unique guitarist but he's a solid one with individual flair showing in brief solos and trills that add depth without becoming pointless exercises (check the great breaks on "The Friendly Enemy," one of the standout tracks all through). At his best he achieves moments of multi-tracked richness that compares favorably to Will Sergeant and Robin Guthrie's work. Slower songs like "Naive" and the amiable waltz of "Crying Red" give keyboardist Peter Baker a chance to stand out as well, adding a bit of psychedelic ...
