$11.15 You've got to hand it to the Toasters. When the third ska revival hit in the mid-'90s, they had already been on the scene for over a decade, and bandleader Rob Hingley's Moon Ska NYC label was home to some of America's (and Canada's and England's) best ska bands. They took advantage of ska's new wave of popularity by releasing a truckload of albums by young bands, and while some have criticized Moon for a certain lack of discrimination during that period, there was no question that the Toasters' own releases were of the highest quality. With the subsequent collapse of the ska revival and the partial collapse of the record industry, Moon went out of business, and the Toasters went back to doing what they do best: playing top-notch 2-tone-derived modern ska for live audiences. Their first studio album in five years shows blessedly little in the way of artistic maturation; it's chock-full of the same old straight-up, R&B-influenced ska that the band has been playing since the early '80s. Blues influences are both explicit (as in "Sweet Home Town Jamaica," a blatant rewrite of "Sweet Home Alabama") and implied (as in the song title "Sitting on Top of the World," which has nothing to do with the Howlin' Wolf classic), and tempos are generally brisk; things occasionally slow to a more sedate skank (as on the excellent "Pendulum"), but for the most part this is joyful, upbeat ska. There are two hidden tracks at the end of the ...
| | Hatebreed Perseverance CD (2002)
100% Thug Rock songs
$11.99 Additional personnel includes: Kerry King, Jonathan Donais, Paul Romanko.
The New Haven, CT metallists never give up, as evidenced here on PERSEVERANCE, their third full-length album. They've further refined their sound--the guttural vocals are more full-throated, the tempos more breakneck, the lyrics just as extreme--all of which points to their second decade proving as tumultuous as their first.
Hatebreed's no-frills, breakneck, double kick-drum propelled, back-to-basics approach is just as much in evidence here as it was on their debut, 1997's SATISFACTION IS THE DEATH OF DESIRE. Songs such as "A Call for Blood" and the tom-tom driven "Bloodsoaked Memories" remain almost as timeless as a Bram Stoker novel, with the same illicit, chilling effect, while "Hollow Ground" ("all that you cherish, all that you love, in the blink of an eye can be taken from you...") has particular ...
| | Discipline Downfall Of The Working Man CD (2006)
100% Thug Rock album
$11.45 Dutch street punk bands seem to exist in some kind of time warp, where the Angelic Upstarts and Sham 69 are the be-all and end-all of punk rock, and the ideals of hoarse, yobbish vocals and riff-driven, rhythmic songs have not yet curdled into the tuneless bark and mindless unison riffing of late-era hardcore. Melody still means something to bands like Discipline, up there with thoughtful, socially-oriented lyrics and singalong choruses. All of the above are present and accounted for on Downfall of the Working ...

| | Bayanga CD (2003)
100% Thug Rock CD music
$30.29 The RAS label might specialize in reggae, but in the case of Puerto Rico's Bayanga, they have a band that's much more than a single genre; in fact, reggae is only apparent on two or three tracks of this self-titled disc. Elsewhere the band takes on salsa, Brazilian axé music, and any number of Caribbean rhythms, as well as forays into much freer ideas (as on "The Cool Bus Experience"). All too often, refusing to be pinned down to such an extent would actually work against them. But in this case, there's an energy and vitality that makes it a plus. They even take on Bob Marley, turning in an excellent version of "I Shot The Sheriff" that's horn-powered, before it takes off into a finale that's eerily reminiscent of early Santana with percussion percolating, and guitar raising the excitement factor. But there's no shortage of pleasures on this disc, whether it's the rootsy "Cohimbre's Stylee'," or the more sophisticated "Rumbaskankin'," which give the song's styles in their titles. These guys can play up a storm -- in fact, about the only area where they could be beefed up is vocally, singer Herminio could use a stronger voice. Beyond that, this is an unalloyed joy, and absolutely perfect for summer. ~ Chris Nickson
