Somehow, after hitting years of the lowest lows, Lydon & Co. came up with this sparkler. It is definitely more accessible than the previous two and later three albums but it goes beyond that. "Fff", "Rise" and "Home" are just inspired: there's no other word for it. Features 7 total tracks. EMI. 1989. Public Image Ltd Album Songs | 1. | FFF (MP3) | |

Album songs
$9.09 (MP3 Available for Download) Reissued in 1993 with six fairly disposable bonus tracks, The Big Heat has Stan Ridgway's love of film noir and Jim Thompson-style stories splashed gaudily all over it. Curiously, though, the album is tremendous fun despite its dependence on synthesizers and tick-tock drum machine work. Ridgway's cynical delivery gives everything else an edge, even in the romance-gone-wrong atmosphere of "Walkin' Home Alone." The standouts include the Ennio Morricone-influenced title track, the demented "Pile Driver," "Drive She Said," and the over-the-top Vietnam tale "Camouflage." [Dis-Information reissued the album in 2004.] ~ Steven McDonald
Digitally remastered at Audio Mechanics.
This is part of the IRS Vintage Years series.
Recorded at J.C. Studios, The Lighthouse and Fiddler's Studio, Los Angeles, California; and live at Queensland University, Brisbane, Australia on February 27, 1987.

| | Beatles Anthology: 1 CDs (1995)
Album album
$28.49 THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is a collection of rare and unreleased Beatles recordings; a companion book and 10-hour video are also planned. Among the material on the first volume are recordings by The Quarry Men (a band that featured a teen-aged John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison); five songs from the Beatles' unsuccessful audition for Decca Records on January 1, 1962; live tracks from various television appearances; and alternate versions of several early Beatles songs.
Additional personnel includes: Tony Sheridan (vocals, guitar); Brian Epstein, Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise (spoken vocals); Andy White (drums).
Principally recorded between 1958 and 1964. "Free As A Bird" recorded circa 1977 and in 1994. Spoken tracks recorded between 1962 and 1994. Includes a 48-page booklet with track-by-track annotations, and liner notes by Derek Taylor.
"Free As A Bird" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Though the Beatles changed rock & roll forever from low culture to high art, they started as a skiffle group, a British amalgam of American rock & roll influences--Elvis' swagger, Little Richard's unholy gospel, the Everly Brothers' country-rock harmonies, Smokey Robinson's sensual soul. THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY: 1 traces these roots, tapping a rich motherlode of unreleased early Beatles material. There are scratchy recordings of the Quarry Men (Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, circa 1958) and pre-Ringo Beatles practice sessions that show the Fabs dreaming of being Elvis and Buddy Holly. Amazingly well-preserved tracks from the early '60s show them starting to let their hair down, while rocking merrily through such pop standards of the time as "Ain't She Sweet" and "Besame Mucho." They were an electrifying live band, and among the treasures here are Ringo tearing through "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Boys" at a 1964 TV taping, and John ripping into "Twist And Shout" at the band's 1963 Royal Command Performance after his famous reque
| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Album CD music
$7.39 (MP3 Available for Download) CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more than just a static groove; its tempos shift midway through and powerful brass figures, timpani punctuations, and harp glissandos soon dominate the mix. Also featuring the powerful "Move On Up," CURTIS is a classic soul record, and its relevance is amplified by its quest for racial harmony and its bold anti-establishment stance. (Note: The 2000 reissue of CURTIS features nine bonus tracks.)

| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
Album MP3 Album
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans and horrifying screams, still induce nervous tension despite the passing years. To hear Alan Vega, an Elvis caricature out of time, crooning "Girl" is unsettling enough. When he acts out the desperation of "Frankie Teardrop" over the strictly controlled minimalism of Martin Rev's grinding keyboard and time-bomb rhythm, you're guaranteed a listening experience quite unlike any other.
There is "difficult music," there is "difficult but rewarding music" and then there is Suicide. Rev's distinctive synthesizer squelch came via a broken Farfisa organ that the duo could not afford to repair. The key to their self-titled debut lies in the film noir communion of Vega's Manhattan blues growl with Vega's dissonant, repetitive, minimalist keyboard stabs. "Ghost Rider" and "Rocket U.S.A." are, to the American underground at least, two of the most influential and enduring songs ever written. The urban paranoia/psychosis of "Frankie Teardrop," meanwhile, is still mesmerizing, 20 years after the album's release. And, yes, still difficult to listen to.
Both of Suicide's first two proper records are technically untitled, and FIRST ALBUM (also sometimes called the "Red Star Album" after the cover symbol) was barely heard at the time of its initial 1977 release. Suicide were easily the most underground of the major artists of the New Yor
| | Gun Club Miami CD (1982)
Album music CDs
$11.15 (MP3 Available for Download) While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up blues of yore are still here ("Devil in the Woods," "Fire of Love"), but wild-child singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce and company also tackle everything from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through the Jungle" (in a surprisingly faithful version) to the atmospheric, somewhat Doors-y "Watermelon Man" (not the Herbie Hancock tune), mixing rock, blues, country, and folk with post-punk energy and Pierce's trademark sense of near-manic urgency. MIAMI doesn't top FIRE OF LOVE, but it runs a close second.

Arranger: Jeffrey Lee Pierce.

| | Sam Cooke Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963: One Night Stand CD (1985)
Album songs
$9.59 (MP3 Available for Download) Recorded live at the Harlem Square Club, Miami, Florida on January 12, 1963. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick.
Sam Cooke's reputation as a brilliant singer is sometimes maintained in spite of some of his records, not because of them. Hugo and Luigi, his RCA producers, often drowned Cooke's stunning pipes in an ocean of inappropriate orchestras and choirs. But compare their single version of "Chain Gang" to the stripped-down, gently swaying, and considerably more heartfelt live version on LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB; no doubt about it, Cooke was a master, and if his producers had been a bit more sympathetic, his stature would be even higher now than it is.
Recorded in Florida in 1963, just over a year before his murder, this 10-track set puts Cooke in front of a small combo and just lets the man go. Every track is a small masterpiece of soul phrasing, and the band is more than up to Cooke's vocal prowess. Listen and be amazed.
Additional Tracks
Personnel: Sam Cooke (vocals); Cornell Dupree, Clifton White (guitars); King Curtis, Tate Houston (saxophone); George Stubbs (piano); Jimmy Lewis (electric bass); Albert "June" Garnder (drums).

| | Sounds Of Nature: Song Of The Dolphins CD (2005)
Album MP3 Album
$9.79 Alongside this release's numerous dolphin calls is the tuneless warble of a generic synthesizer. It's unfortunate too, because the mammal noises are recorded crisply. ~ Johnny Loftus
This CD contains the therapeutic sounds of dolphins. Their universal appeal, serentiy, grace and joy will uplift your spirit, relax your mind and ease the stresses of the day. Fabulous. 2005.
| | Death In Vegas Scorpio Rising CD (2003) Bonus Track; Japan
Album music CDs
$24.45 Additional personnel includes: Paul Weller, Dot Allison, Hope Sandoval, Nicola Kuperus, Susan Dillane (vocals).
SCORPIO RISING is a 2003 release by U.K. big beat act Death In Vegas.
For the duo's anticipated third album, Scorpio Rising, Death in Vegas has seemingly adopted the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, once again drawing from elements of gritty rock, techno repetition, and spacy psychedelia. On first listen, Scorpio Rising (the name is taken from a Kenneth Anger film) feels overly monotonous, as nearly every song quickly finds its groove and sticks with it from start to finish with little variety in the process. However, multiple listens reveal that not only is Scorpio Rising noticeably more upbeat overall than its gothic predecessor, but its diversity comes from the many genres and musical styles that it incorporates. It doesn't hurt either that the album also stars a new cast of guest musicians. Returning to the fold is Dot Allison ("Diving Horses"), who is joined by the likes of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval ("Killing Smile" and "Help Yourself") and Woodbine's Susan Dillane ("Girls" and "23 Lies"), all of whom are delegated to contribute their breathy voices over lush psychedelic soundscapes for an effect that is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine.
Fittingly handling the reins of the album's more rocking numbers are Oasis' Liam Gallagher and former Jam frontman Paul Weller. Both of their efforts tip their hat to 1960s rock, with the title track highlighting Gallagher as he sings over what sounds like a blend of middle-period Beatles and Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men," while Weller's strident take on Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" provides the album with some fun and unpredictability. Also unpredictable is "Killing Smile," which is among Death in Vegas' most welcoming and folk-influenced songs. The track also accentuates the unique combination of Sandoval's vocals and the string arrangements of Indian violinist Dr. Subramaniam, who also pair up for the grand "Help Yourself," another of the album's high points. Perhaps the album's best track sounds like something that could have been included on The Contino Sessions --- "Hands Around My Throat," which unleashes a hypnotic syncopated keyboard loop and simple bassline along with a menacing vocal from Adult.'s Nicola Kuperus, a seething version of Blondie as she intones, "Try this and you might find/I'm in your place, I see your face." The only tracks that don't improve with time are "Leather" and "Natja," both forgettable instrumentals that need more than studio trickery to make them interesting. Aside from these missteps, Scorpio Rising suffers a bit from its own ambition, lacking the brooding consistency that made The Contino Sessions feel like a proper album. Scorpio Rising may not have the coherence of its forerunner, but its individual eclectic achievements still add up to an engaging album. ~ Lee Meyer
