$12.65 I had this wacky idea. I asked myself, "What would a carnival ride sound like, spewing out a frenzy of yuletide holiday merriment and cheer? I know . . . it would sound like 'The Nutcracker Suite' played by an orchestra of guitars!" Well, maybe that's not exactly what it would sound like, but I had all these guitars and some spare time . . . okay, so I had a lot of spare time.First I picked up a copy of the orchestral score for "The Nutcracker Suite". As I leafed through the pages I nearly fainted. Maybe it was child's play for a classically trained musician, but for a self taught-one like me it might as well have been quantum physics. I looked at all those black dots and thought, "Wow, I wonder what those are for?" Then I rolled up my sleeves in my appropriately decorated, luxuriously appointed studio, (which in it's former life had been my luxuriously appointed basement), plugged in my guitar, and stared blankly at the first page. You know that old joke, "How do you get a guitar player to turn down? You put some music in front of him!" Well, that was me. I thought, "Man, this is hard. What was I thinking?"Day after day I would go into my "Ultraphonic Winter Wonderland of Sound" and slug it out with Mr. Tchaikovsky - page by page, measure by measure, and all too often . . . note by note. I was black and blue from the woodshed whipping I was taking, but it was starting to come together! It was starting to sound like something! That crazed holiday carnival ride of festive sound was taking shape! Sometimes in the heat of labor I had to stop and laugh out loud. It's impossible to describe what happens when all those guitars join together in rhapsodic refrain it's like nothing you've heard before. As it moves from sweet and soothing to joyous pandemonium it twangs, yet it chimes. I remember when I was a youngster hearing the music and sounds from an old merry-go-round at the State Fair. It was part steam calliope, part giant mechanical music box. The way it whistled, huffed, and clanged had me mesmerized. I stood and watched it for hours. I was captivated. It cast a spell on me. I think of all that magic and mystery when I listen to "The Symphony of Guitars". It's a wacky sound.Enjoy the ride.
