Personnel: Stefon Harris (vibraphone, marimba); Pedro Martinez (vocals, percussion); Anne Drummond (flute, alto flute); Casey Benjamin (alto saxophone); Xavier Davis (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Marc Cary (Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Darryl Hall (acoustic bass); Terreon Gully (drums). Audio Mixer: Joe Ferla. Recording information: The Hit Factory, New York, NY (11/20/2003/11/21/2003). Photographer: Nitin Vadukul. Stefon Harris & Blackout have created a powerful blend of jazz and R&B with a hip-hop percussion accent on their well-titled CD Evolution. With Harris doubling on vibes and marimba, keyboardist Marc Cary, alto saxophonist Casey Benjamin, and bassist Darryl Hall, plus the driving percussion of Terreon Gully, the quintet's energy is immediately apparent. Their surprising opener is an in-your-face interpretation of the late Don Grolnick's post-bop "Nothing Personal," which departs so drastically from the composer's conception that it sounds like a brand new work. Hall penned the exotic "For Him, for Her," which features Harris on marimba and Anne Drummond's floating flute. Those who have ignored rocker Sting's work may be shocked when they hear Harris' lyrical interpretation of the ballad "Until," which adds Xavier Davis on piano. George Gershwin's "Summertime" gets an overdue makeover with the addition of a hip-hop rhythm, yet retains its magic with Benjamin's warm solo and Harris' imaginative vibes. The many sudden twists within Harris' infectious "Blackout" and the chant "King Tut's Strut" (written by Hotep Idris Galeta, and adding percussionist and vocalist Pedro Martinez) also merit attention. Stefon Harris & Blackout will likely have a huge hit on their hands with this groundbreaking release. ~ Ken Dryden Stefon Harris Evolution Songs Purchase Evolution CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)

$8.59 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of JUJU includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Reggie Workman (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 3, 1964. Originally released on Blue Note (84182). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (1998, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Fulfilling the potential promised on his Blue Note debut, Night Dreamer, Wayne Shorter's Ju Ju was the first really great showcase for both his performance and compositional gifts. Early in his career as a leader Shorter was criticized as a mere acolyte of John Coltrane, and his use of Coltrane's rhythm section on his first two Blue Note albums only bolstered that criticism. The truth is, though, that Elvin Jones, Reggie Workman, and McCoy Tyner were the perfect musicians to back Shorter. Jones' playing at the time was almost otherworldly. He seemed to channel the music through him when improvising and emit the perfect structure to hold it together. Workman too seemed to almost instinctively understand how to embellish Shorter's compositions. McCoy Tyner's role as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time was played here as well, and his light touch and beautiful, joyful improvisations would make him a much better match for Shorter than Herbie Hancock would later prove to be. JuJu rests in the uphill portion of Shorter's creative peak. While the sidemen may have been an even better match for him than the ensembles he would put together for later albums, he was just beginning to find his footing as a leader. ...
