With the release of their classic 1974 debut, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, Richard and Linda Thompson set an unbelievably high standard for themselves. Although containing many of the same attributes, their follow-up, Hokey Pokey, doesn't quite reach the lofty heights of its predecessor, but then again not many records do. The Thompsons, from the opening Irish fiddle derivation of a Chuck Berry riff, through Linda's exquisite performance of "A Heart Needs a Home," to their cover of Mike Waterson's "Mole in a Hole" which closes the record, once again create a timeless amalgam of folk and rock. Recorded at the time of the Thompsons' conversion to Islam, Hokey Pokey comes across a bit lighter than Bright Lights. Songs such as the playfully suggestive title track, the jaunty "Georgie on a Spree" and the quirky tale of "Smiffy's Glass Eye" make Hokey Pokey seem downright cheery for Richard Thompson, although even at its sunniest, themes of sex, cruelty and avarice linger just below the surface. For those more accustomed to the usual straightforward doom and gloom from the Thompsons, there's the rueful "I'll Regret It All in the Morning," the sullen, traditional tone of "The Sun Never Shines on the Poor" and the mournful ballad "Never Again." Hokey Pokey is an often overlooked gem in the Thompsons' luminous catalog. ~ Brett Hartenbach

Hokey Pokey album
$12.99 Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of Neu!, or the riffs of Amon Duul, but they had guts and an unsinkable sense of "anything goes." Given the success of industrial music and the ...
| | Gene Clark No Other CD (1974)
Hokey Pokey CD music
$11.69 Ex-Byrd Gene Clark's early-'70s solo efforts, which rank alongside the recordings of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in terms of quality, vision, and appeal, have been unjustly overlooked. This is particularly true of NO OTHER, Clark's 1974 coup de grace. While the focus of NO OTHER's excellent predecessors WHITE LIGHT and ROADMASTER was on stripped down, passionate country-rock, NO OTHER pushes Clark's aesthetic to another level entirely. A cadre of female backing vocalists lend gospel-drenched color to the album, taking Clark's excellent compositions to church, and giving the whole a sanctified feel.
Amid the strummed acoustics and weeping pedal steel of songs like "Life's Greatest Fool" and "The True One," there is also the expansive, orchestral feel of "Strength of Strings" which sounds like the Moody Blues by way of the Delta, and the exceptional title track, which encompasses sinuous ...
| | Richard & Linda Thompson I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight CD (1974)
Hokey Pokey music CDs
$9.19 The debut album from Richard and Linda started a career that has placed Thompson in the 'forever to be a huge cult figure' bracket. They did everything on this album, bar make the charts and sell records. Folk, rock, country and pop are brilliantly covered in a tasteful and controlled package that is a delight from beginning to end, with Linda singing beautifully. Concert favourites such as 'The Calvary Cross' and 'When I Get To The Border' are to be found here. It is not flippant to say that Richard Thompson is a world class songwriter and guitarist, albeit totally under-appreciated.
In 1974, Richard Thompson and the former Linda Peters released their first album together, and I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight was nothing short of a masterpiece, the starkly beautiful refinement of the promise of the Thompsons' solo debut, Henry the Human Fly. In Linda Thompson, Richard found a superb collaborator and a world-class vocalist; Linda possessed a voice as clear and rich as Sandy Denny's, but with a strength that could easily support Richard's often weighty material, and she proved capable of tackling anything presented to her, from the delicately mournful ...
