$14.29 This may be composer John Adams's most ambitious undertaking to date, one that moves him further out of the "minimalist" category. A massive, sprawling opus, it bombards the listener with a dizzying array of swirling melodies, chugging rhythms, vivid sonic colors, and lush orchestral textures. Yet for all its complexity, this three-movement work never overwhelms the ear. Adams makes the work emotionally compelling by creating a variety of moods that sometimes blend smoothly and at other times collide with a clamor.
Poignant melodies churn and percolate until they explode into raucous climaxes; jubilant fanfares crash into craggy dissonance; motifs that dance and spin as if out of control somehow resolve into peaceful reveries. It all makes for a gripping study of struggle and contrast and an adventurous journey through ever-changing soundscapes. Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, to whom this work is dedicated, leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an assured performance that crackles with excitement. The accompanying booklet includes an excellent essay by fellow composer Ingram Marshall providing valuable insight and perspective. Kudos to Adams for creating a provocative yet accessible work that challenges listeners without a hint of intimidation.

$11.89 This album received the 2005 Grammy Awards for "Best Classical Album," "Best Orchestral Performance," and "Best Classical Contemporary Composition."
The New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center exercised superb judgment in commissioning John Adams for a work commemorating the heroes and victims of 9/11. Few composers could effectively articulate the horror of that day or live up to the responsibility of representing the enormity of such tragedy and sorrow while appropriately honoring the memory of all those who perished. Adams, through a musical language that's erudite yet reassuringly accessible, is unique in his ability to connect with listeners without compromising artistic integrity.
'On the Transmigration of Souls' is a stunning work. It incorporates pre-recorded sounds and voices into a live performance by children's chorus, adult chorus, and orchestra to create a richly textured soundscape that's haunting yet somehow uplifting. Invoking the spirit of Charles Ives, the densely layered piece avoids the pitfalls of cheap sentimentality and sensationalism, but instead conveys a sense of time and place that falls somewhere between reality and a dream-like state. The New York Choral Artists and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, as well as Lorin Maazel and the members of the orchestra, deserve special credit for their consummate artistry in meeting the demands of this difficult score. Adams is to be commended for responding to the pressure of a commission of this magnitude with a work of profound sensitivity and grace.
The Wire (p.50) - "[Adams is] an extremely subtle orchestrator, and in terms of orchestration alone this is one of his best works....The range of textures he draws from The New York Philharmonic and the two choirs at his disposal is extraordinary."
