While female singers have never been absent from the pop world, the turn of the 21st century was a particularly fruitful time for women in pop, as well as country, R&B, and rock music. Canadian folk-rocker Sarah McLachlan created the all-female outdoor festival Lilith Fair, which gave voice to musical poets of all shades. And musical poets abounded, from the earnest innocence of Jewel to the sexually charged fury of Alanis Morissette to the learned soulfulness of Alicia Keys. Country singers such as Faith Hill and teen sensation LeAnn Rimes explored an increasingly populated furrow that edged further into pop territory. And, of course, while young coquettes such as Christina Aguilera performed sold-out shows at arenas across the country, their predecessor Cher was nearing age 60, still scoring hits and putting on spectacular live performances.
WOMEN & SONGS collects tracks from all of the aforementioned artists and other superstars, while introducing many to up-and-coming artists. Dance-popster Cherie combines Stevie Nicks-ish immediacy with a teen-pop sensibility, while, on the other end of the field, Rachel Yamagata hearkens back to inventive 1960s folk. With this broad range of artists, the WOMEN & SONGS collection lives up to the wide scope of its title.

Women & Songs album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Women & Songs CD music
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene ...

Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick and the surviving members of the Doors, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS is a solid tribute to the band.
The first Doors album was an important development in the evolution of rock, representing the ...
| | Hot Rod Circuit If It's Cool With You, It's Cool With Me CD (2000)
Women & Songs CD music
$11.85 On this follow-up to their fine debut, If I Knew Now What I Knew Then, Hot Rod Circuit refines their sound, tightening things up and only vaguely approximating the oft-compared emo-core artists like the Get Up Kids. The melodic focus and energy of the group's indie pop (not to mention eventual label affiliation with ...
| | Flash & The Pan Collection CD (1994) (Import) Germany
Women & Songs music CDs
$10.05 The 2003 Flash and the Pan retrospective Hits Collection appears on the import-only Albert label. Its track listing is identical to the 1994 Epic release Collection, which had since fallen out of print. Obviously, "Hey St Peter" is here, as are the lesser (in America, anyway) singles "Yesterday's Gone" and "Down Among the Dead Men." Depending on your taste in new wave, these are the best tracks here, but Harry Vanda and George Young were professional songwriters, so there are also nuggets like "Media Man" and "Hey Jimmy," which sounds like Cake meeting Gary Wilson in a dark alley. Hits Collection will be essential for only the most ardent fan, if only because no one else will want to pay the steep import price. Another way to go would be the Renaissance reissue of the group's first two albums, Flash and the Pan/Lights in the Night. It includes most of their highlights, and will serve the casual listener well. ~ Johnny Loftus
As members of the Easybeats, Happy's Whiskey Sour, the Marcus Hook Roll Band, and Paintbox, George Young and Harry Vanda ended up forming Flash ...
