Purchase Big Band Favorites CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Big Band Favorites album
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
Big Band Favorites CD music
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at all to say that Hamilton's music had no fire, guts, or glory, ...

| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
Big Band Favorites album
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.
The infectious boogaloo ...
| | Spyro Gyra Road Scholars CD (1997)
Big Band Favorites CD music
$12.65 If you don't like Lite Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Instrumental Pop, whatever you want to call it; stuff that wouldn't sound out of place in between David Sanborn and Kenny G on your local radio station, you probably shouldn't even be reading this far, because Spyro Gyra are avatars of the style. If their bag is your bag, however, you can feel comfortable diving right in to the sonic tapestry that is ROAD SCHOLARS. The band's synth-driven instrumental assault, led by keyboardist Tom Schuman, has remained consistent throughout their years of recording and touring together, and the formula here is very much in keeping with their trademark sound.
Funky drums, complex, dexterous keyboard work, and spare, melodic ...
| | Taj Mahal Giant Step/De Old Folks At Home CD (1969)
Big Band Favorites music CDs
$7.59 Taj Mahal is one of the significant figures in post-1950s blues, but his sense of playful experimentation always pushes at the boundaries of the genre. GIANT STEP is one of his classics, featuring the singer/guitarist's inimitable gravelly vocals on a range of tunes that mix rural and electric blues, country, and rock. Whether on the trucker anthem "Six Days on the Road," the rollicking "Good Morning Little School Girl," or gems from the blues canon, including covers of Blind Willie Johnson's "You're ...

| | Jim Band Pullman Shed My Skin CD (2003)
Big Band Favorites CD music
$6.69 A multifaceted guitarist/vocalist/songwriter, a groove heavy bass player, and a drummer with roots in jazz. These are the three elements that combine to create the classic yet unique sound of The Jim Pullman Band. Formed in 2001, the JPB has been gaining attention in and around their homebase of Eau Claire, Wisconsin on the strength of their live shows. Phrases such as "power folk" and "pop with a punch" have been used to describe the groups sound. Rather than hiding the acoustic guitar behind the music to add "texture" Pullman has brought the acoustic guitar out front...Providing Rhythmic melodies, and Driving acoustic grooves for the music to stand on! At the foundation are, Bill Nelson, an intricate rock solid drummer, and Kalin Capra, adding bass lines that are both elegant, and melodic. The variety of styles in the bands original songs as well as the tunes they've chosen to cover in a live setting bear witness to the diversity of this fast-rising trio. The Genesis of the band traces back to it s namesake, guitarist/vocalist Jim Pullman. After performing several solo shows in Eau Claire, Pullman was looking to flesh out his sound. High school classmate and close friend Bill Nelson hadn't touched a drum set in years, but figured he could lend his pal a hand and at least give him something to play along with. After wearing off the rust, as well as the cement in Pullmans basement, Nelsons talent was reborn and the two of them reached an obvious conclusion: this was the origin of a band. Now they just needed someone to play bass. That someone was Kalin Capra. A seasoned veteran of other local bands, Capra would indeed prove to be the final piece of the puzzle. Possessing a musical background radically different than his new cohorts, the bassist would add not only to the rhythm of the JPB, but also ...
