More than two decades after Depeche Mode's debut, mouthpiece Dave Gahan finally got around to releasing his solo debut in the shape of 2003's PAPER MONSTERS. Having wrestled with more than his share of personal demons during his ascent to stardom, it's no surprise that this Gahan fills the album with echoes of his inner struggle. Working with New York City-based multi-instrumentalist Knox Chandler, the dour vocalist injects enough swirling synths, droning guitars, and oddly arranged strings to approximate a murder-ballad ambiance that brings to mind Nick Cave. This is particularly true on songs like the harrowing "Black and Blue Again" and the subtler, more ambient "Stay."
Gahan also manages to flex some of his more rock & roll-inspired muscles, pumping swooning harmonies and glammy guitar into the swaggering opening cut "Dirty Sticky Floors" and blowing some sleazy-sounding harmonica over the gritty stomp of "Bottle Living." With PAPER MONSTERS following quickly on the heels of Martin Gore's equally stellar solo outing COUNTERFEIT 2, Depeche Mode fans were given more than enough to feast on until the pair got back to their day jobs.
As the lead vocalist for Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan appeared to be far removed from the common trappings of rock & roll stardom. Although the group often flirted with gloomy overtones throughout their career, they maintained a largely squeaky-clean image. By the early '90s, however, Gahan had moved to L.A., gotten hooked on heroin and booze, and immersed himself in the grunge scene. When Depeche Mode regrouped to record Songs of Faith & Devotion, Gahan had transformed himself into the perennial junkie. As his addictions worsened, Gahan lost his friends, lost himself, and for a few short minutes, lost his life before paramedics revived him after an all-night drug binge. Following Gahan's journey through both physical and mental rehabilitation, Paper Monsters is what many would expect -- a collection of material culled from his addictions, failed relationships, and spiritual rebirth. While the lyrics on Paper Monsters lack some of the depth and clever irony associated with those of bandmate Martin Gore, Gahan masters innuendo, often hiding the true identities of his subjects. As the titles suggest, "Dirty Sticky Floors" and "Bottle Living" are glam-induced snapshots of Gahan's days spent at rock-bottom. "Hold On" and "A Little Piece" each offer a glimpse into Gahan's reconciliations with a higher power, while "Bitter Apple," "Black and Blue Again," and "Goodbye" shed light on his relationships, both bad and good. On "I Need You" and "Hidden Houses," Gahan so

Paper Monsters music CDs
$9.79 Tony Hiller assembled Brotherhood of Man as his own spin on the 5th Dimension, or perhaps the Southern California soft pop of Roger Nichols. Either way, Hiller's Brotherhood of Man -- a coed group of professional singers top-lined by studio pro Tony Burrows (later a singer with the First Class, among many other studio-bound bubblegum sensations) and Sue & Sunny, a pair who had a single prior to this group, backed by anonymous Brit session men -- are a prime example of how peace and love were turned into MOR fodder at the turn of '60s, and not necessarily in an unpleasant way. With all these layered harmonies, sweetly trilling strings, and soft insistent melodies, United We Stand is the furthest thing from unpleasant, even if there is a heavier than expected quotient of fuzz guitars that give this a swinging mod sheen lacking from some of the squarer SoCal sounds. Not that United We Stand is hip -- looking back, it seems impossible that anyone above 12 or under 30 was sucked into this -- but it does unwittingly capture its time with its fuzz tones, paisley harmonies, and songs about singing in the sunshine as you love one another in the land of love. Yes, the songs on United We Stand are that cheerfully over the top, sometimes seeming like latter-day parodies of hippie homogenization, but the chief attributes of the record are Hiller's lush production and happily commercial melodies, which really do help make this a prime piece of pop archeology. That's not the same thing as making the album good, but this is a rare album from a studio-crafted one-hit wonder where the album tracks actually follow through effectively on the sound of the hit.
The 2008 RPM reissue offers even more soft pop hits, as it adds 13 bonus tracks to the original 11-track album. All these are singles that followed the release of the LP, including the six songs issued as Sue & Sunny singles and the B-side to "Sing in the Sunshine." By and large this material isn't as hippy-dippy ...

$19.69 Few rock artists seem as custom-made for the "orchestral treatment" as classical metal buff Yngwie Malmsteen, and that's just what occurred with his 2002 release, Concerto Suite Live with Japan Philharmonic. Although not his first guitar-meets-orchestra release (1998's Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1 preceded it), the latter album turns out to be a much more ...
