| | Billy Cobham Magic CD - Import Billy Cobham Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
MAGIC features the innovated jazz sound of drummer Billy Cobham on this U.K. reissue release. Of all Billy Cobham's Columbia fusion sessions, time has been the most unkind to Magic. Despite some inspired and at times awe-inspiring performances, the album is too much a product of its era, suffering from sickly sweet production, awkward vocal contributions, and ill-fitting clarinet contributions from an out of place Alvin Batiste. Strip away the viscous layers of gloss and indulgence, and Magic begins to live up to its title. Cobham's rhythmic interplay with bassist Randy Jackson and percussionists Pete Escovedo and Sheila E. is nothing short of astounding, as fierce and funky as anything in the drummer's catalog. But the songs are tepid and the arrangements overbaked, not to mention that Pete Maunu's guitar wankery verging on the point of absurdity. All in all, too much of a good thing, yet still not enough. ~ Jason Ankeny

Billy's Best!!!! In the mid-seventies, Billy Cobham went south to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he picked up the musical director of Southern University, the late-great Alvin Baptiste and three of his prize students, Randy Jackson (yes, the same Randy that hosts American Idol), Charlie Singleton (Cameo) and Ray Mouton (MIA). Sheila E also makes an appearance with her father Pete Escovedo. This album should have been printed up by Columbia Records a long time ago. Shame on you. Get it now if you can. BC's fusion is one of a kind I heard this BC collection for the first time in the 1970s. My LP is worn out. Magic is unique hard-hitting jazz-rock. Tracks like Leaward Winds, AC/DC and Antares’ – The Star bring home BC’s exclusive style and energy. Submitted by Bullhead (Oregon, WI USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Cactus Restrictions CD (1971)
Magic
$9.55 With a mixture of members from Vanilla Fudge, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and the Amboy Dukes, it's hard to believe that Cactus didn't really succeed in their time. Often derided for being second-rate boogie rock, the band simply did what it did, and part of the allure of the style is its sloppy, second-rate nature. This 1971 release may not see the band at their peak, but it surely showcases the occasionally thundering rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. Why a song like "Token Chokin'" was never a hit and why it has yet to be embraced by the classic rock-loving public is a complete mystery. The song is some of the most heels-up, thundering, so-brainless-it's-genius rock that has ever been to tape. It's complete with big guitars, big sing-alongs, and a bass-and-drum combo that could knock out windows. Somebody ...
| | Return To Forever Returns CDs (2008)
Magic
$15.19 Return to Forever: Al di Meola (guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chick Corea (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, upright bass, electric bass, bass guitar); Lenny White (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Buck Snow; Bernie Kirsh. The 2008 reunion of Return to Forever's classic mid-1970s line-up marked an extraordinary event for fans of progressive jazz fusion. The band built their reputation on the mind-boggling chemistry of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Dimeola. That chemistry proves as explosive as ever 20 years after the group first dazzled audiences with their complex, rock-influenced hybrids. The two-disc set RETURNS features live recordings from Return to Forever's reunion tour, boasting such classics as "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" and "The Romantic Warrior." There is, as one might guess, no shortage of stretching out from ...
| | Art Farmer Interaction/Sing Me Softly Of The Blues CD (1963)
Magic
$10.69 2 LPs on 1 CD: INTERACTION (1963)/SING ME SOFTLY THE BLUES (1965). Includes liner notes by Gene Lees and Herb Wong. INTERACTION: Art Farmer Quartet: Art Farmer (flugelhorn); Jim Hall (guitar); Steve Swallow (bass); Walter Perkins (drums). Originally released on Atlantic (1412). SONG ME SOFTLY THE BLUES: Art Farmer Quartet: Art Farmer (flugelhorn); Steve Kuhn (piano); Steve Swallow (bass); Pete La Roca (drums). Originally released on Atlantic (1442). Personnel: Art Farmer (flugelhorn); Jim Hall (guitar); Steve Kuhn (piano); Pete La Roca, Walter Perkins (drums). Liner Note Authors: Gene Lees; Herb Wong. Recording information: 1963-1965. This compilation from Collectables restores to circulation two strong Atlantic dates from Art Farmer's immediate post-Jazztet period. One session features Farmer's quartet playing standards with swinging subtlety; the other draws on original writing and has a classic, hard bop feel. Interaction, from 1963, is a vehicle for the intertwining improvisations of guitarist Jim Hall and Farmer, on flügelhorn, who weaves through and around Hall's sublimely understated lines with disarming ease, elegance, and sensitivity. Their approach draws to mind the great duet outings Hall made with pianist Bill Evans (Undercurrent ...
| | Is It...Man Or Astroman? CD (1993)
Magic
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring pistons and accident bulletins along the way. With anything so aggressively "up" in nature, there are a couple moments that inevitably droop a bit in exhaustion, ...

| | Luciana Souza Norte E Sul/North And South CD (2003) (Import) Brazil
Magic
$19.49 Personnel: Luciana Souza (vocals); Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone); Bruce barth, Fred Hersch, Edward Simon (piano); Scott Colley (acostic bass); Clarence Penn (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Luciana Souza. NORTH AND SOUTH was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Adapter: Luciane Ribeiro. Personnel: Donny McCaslin (tenor saxophone); Edward Simon , Fred Hersch, Bruce Barth (piano); Scott Colley (acoustic bass); Clarence Penn (drums). Audio Mixers: Francois Zalacain; James Farber. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: David Korchin. Arranger: Luciana Souza. To be an excellent singer of standards, whether jazz or Brazilian or otherwise, an artist must possess a strong yet subtle voice and work with a sympathetic band. To really endear him or herself to fans, though, he or she must also know their repertoire; not only which songs to sing, but how to sing them: which parts to embrace and which to re-imagine (and, of course, the amounts of both). Any of these skills are enough to spark a solid record, but Luciana Souza has all of them, and thus her work is usually brilliant. North and South is the third album of what Souza terms a trilogy -- the first was a tribute to poet Elizabeth Bishop, the second a collection of her arrangements of traditional Brazilian songs (Brazilian Duos). She closes out the series by balancing standards from America and Brazil (thus the title), appropriately recalling her Brazilian forebears Sylvia Telles and Elis Regina, as well as contemporary ...
