| | Billy Cobham Magic CD - Import Billy Cobham Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
MAGIC features the innovated jazz sound of drummer Billy Cobham on this U.K. reissue release.
Of all Billy Cobham's Columbia fusion sessions, time has been the most unkind to Magic. Despite some inspired and at times awe-inspiring performances, the album is too much a product of its era, suffering from sickly sweet production, awkward vocal contributions, and ill-fitting clarinet contributions from an out of place Alvin Batiste. Strip away the viscous layers of gloss and indulgence, and Magic begins to live up to its title. Cobham's rhythmic interplay with bassist Randy Jackson and percussionists Pete Escovedo and Sheila E. is nothing short of astounding, as fierce and funky as anything in the drummer's catalog. But the songs are tepid and the arrangements overbaked, not to mention that Pete Maunu's guitar wankery verging on the point of absurdity. All in all, too much of a good thing, yet still not enough. ~ Jason Ankeny

Billy's Best!!!! In the mid-seventies, Billy Cobham went south to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he picked up the musical director of Southern University, the late-great Alvin Baptiste and three of his prize students, Randy Jackson (yes, the same Randy that hosts American Idol), Charlie Singleton (Cameo) and Ray Mouton (MIA). Sheila E also makes an appearance with her father Pete Escovedo. This album should have been printed up by Columbia Records a long time ago. Shame on you. Get it now if you can. BC's fusion is one of a kind I heard this BC collection for the first time in the 1970s. My LP is worn out. Magic is unique hard-hitting jazz-rock. Tracks like Leaward Winds, AC/DC and Antares’ – The Star bring home BC’s exclusive style and energy. Submitted by Bullhead (Oregon, WI USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CDs (1959) With DVD; 50th Anniversary Edition
Magic CD music
$16.09 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, ...
| | Beegie Adair Yesterday: A Solo Piano Tribute To The Music Of The Beatles CD (2008)
Magic music CDs
$7.63 Ms. Beegie Adair is one of those musicians many people have heard without realizing it. She's played on numerous country and pop sessions, on Johnny Cash's 1970's TV show, and behind singers Dinah Shore and Peggy Lee. Adair also has a jazz career, and has played with trumpeters Lew Tabackin and Nat Adderley. Needless to say, she's highly versatile, but Adair's own style leans towards the lyricism of Bill Evans and George Shearing. YESTERDAY finds Ms. Adair paying homage to the Beatles as she opens many of their finest ballads to jazz reinvention, maintaining the heart of the song while making these timeless tunes her own.
Once in a while a musician comes along with impeccable technique, deep understanding of the jazz repertoire, an innate tendency to swing and the rare ability to communicate the heart and soul of a tune to listeners. That musician is Beegie Adair.About her ...

| | Jeff Golub Avenue Blue CD (1994)
Magic album
$9.45 It seems like ages since record companies had actual house producers, but Mesa-Bluemoon's Rick Braun seems to be gracing some of the label's most engaging projects these days. First came Willie & Lobo's worldbeat finesse, and now Avenue Blue featuring Jeff Golub, a snappy, fluid guitarist who takes the sharp lilt of Steve Laury into fascinatingly cool textures ranging from hip-hop to atmospheric new age with just enough jazz tradition infused to cross genres. It's a credit to Golub, in fact, that his wide ...

| | Art Farmer Interaction/Sing Me Softly Of The Blues CD (1999)
Magic music CDs
$11.75 This compilation from Collectables restores to circulation two strong Atlantic dates from Art Farmer's immediate post-Jazztet period. One session features Farmer's quartet playing standards with swinging subtlety; the other draws on original writing and has a classic, hard bop feel. Interaction, from 1963, is a vehicle for the intertwining improvisations of guitarist Jim Hall and Farmer, on flügelhorn, who weaves through and around Hall's sublimely understated lines with disarming ease, elegance, and sensitivity. Their approach draws to mind the great duet outings Hall made with pianist Bill Evans (Undercurrent and Intermodulation). Bassist Steve Swallow, at this time still strictly an acoustic player, and drummer Walter Perkins are also given lots of the spotlight in a intimate mix that highlights the quartet's telepathic interplay. The only misgiving is some occasional distortion in Hall's and Swallow's parts. Sing Me Softly of the Blues, the more extroverted of these two dates, is a 1965 session, again with Swallow, along with pianist Steve Kuhn and drummer Pete La Roca. Kuhn frequently plays with go-for-broke intensity, his sheer exuberance more than making up for occasional technical lapses. His keyboard-pounding passion is heard to best advantage on the group's version of Carla Bley's "Ad Infinitum." La Roca, in the mold of the best hard bop drummers, plays with drive, intensity, and an ability ...
| | Man Or Astroman Is It...Man Or Astro-Man? CD (1993)
Magic songs
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring pistons and accident bulletins along the way. With anything so aggressively "up" in nature, there are a couple moments that inevitably droop a bit in exhaustion, like the novelty filler of "Organ Smash" and the uncharacteristically long "Alien Visitors," that tiredly meanders through some of the very same clichEs that at other times serve the band best. This being said, how can ...
| | Alex Sipiagin Hindsight CD (2002)
Magic album
$14.79 Trumpeter Alex Sipiagin sticks with a quintet lineup on his second Criss Cross outing, but this time opts for guitar over piano. Tenor saxophonist Chris Potter remains in place from the first session; Adam Rogers, who is finally gaining wider exposure, ably fills the chair previously occupied by Dave Kikoski; and a new rhythm section appears, with Boris Kozlov on bass and Gene Jackson on drums. The music is magnificent, and thankfully the takes are nice and long, giving the soloists more than enough room to push the envelope. In addition to four strong originals, Sipiagin offers an elevated reading of Mingus' "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," two equally stirring takes of Bill Evans' "Very Early," and a priceless flügelhorn/acoustic guitar duet on Monk's "Light Blue." Sipiagin's orchestrations are ceaselessly probing and imaginative; there are times, like on the out-blues title track, when the harmonized lines he plays with Potter sound like three horns. Combining ...
| | Luciana Souza Norte E Sul (North And South) CD (2003) (Import) Brazil
Magic CD music
$30.55 NORTH AND SOUTH was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
On NORTH AND SOUTH, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza traverses both hemispheres to lend her unique, technically accomplished voice to American and Brazilian standards. Souza's vocal approach is significant in that she marries the thin, studied tonality of classic Brazilian singers like Elis Regina to phrasings and rhythms that reflect contemporary North American vocalists. Alternating between English and Portuguese, Souza manages to sound at once detached, impassioned, casual, harmonically adventurous, rhythmically loose, and technically precise on every cut here.
Perhaps it ...
