Donald Harrison has had several musical identities in his career. Best known as a post-bop altoist who played early on with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, a quintet that he co-led with Terence Blanchard, and his own jazz groups, Harrison has also been interested in hip-hop, smooth jazz, rap, and funk. His sound on alto has always been original and he has an open-minded approach to music. However, although The Power of Cool has been called "a smooth classic," in reality this CTI extravaganza has Harrison mostly cast as a bit player despite the fact that he is supposedly the leader. Recorded during producer Creed Taylor's comeback years when he attempted to bring the revived CTI label back to the former glories it had reached in the 1970s (that dream did not last long), Harrison is mostly confined to moderately soulful melody statements. Vocalists dominate half of the selections, the arrangements and compositions are commercial and quite forgettable, and Harrison sounds like an anonymous studio player, even on a simplification of Lee Morgan's "Ceora." The presence of trumpeter Wallace Roney and guitarist Larry Coryell only helps a little, while Jimi Hendrix's posthumous appearance on "The Wind Cries Mary" seems a bit exploitative. At no time do these performances rise above the level of pleasant background music, but fortunately Donald Harrison has recorded many much more rewarding CDs in his career. ~ Scott Yanow

With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. MUGZY'S MOVE is the second release from noted swingsters Royal Crown Revue. The album features some prime examples of this seven-piece ensemble's own brand of gangster-culture-laced-swing. There's the finger-snapping, bullet-flying groove of "Zip Gun Bop," complete with singer Eddie Nichols' between-verse, Joe-Pesci-like vocal chiding. Sinatraesque numbers like "Beyond the Sea" show the band's knack for catchy orchestration. They also provide opportunities for Nichols to show himself off as a serious crooner.
