This is a hard-edged fusion quartet with guitarist Allan Holdsworth. ~ Michael G. Nastos
First time on CD, remastered reissue of the jazz drummer's 1975 album. Sony. 2005. Tony Williams Believe It Songs Believe It Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Lingering Suprise I bought a used copy of this album--on cassette--for a couple of bucks and on a whim, knowing the name 'Tony Williams' but not knowing any of his music. Man! talk about surprised. I knew multiple albums featuring Allan Holdsworth's guitar, so as I read the liner notes after purchase I became intrigued. And, upon listening to 'Believe It,' I was blown away. Not only is Holdworth's playing typically excellent, but it meshes exceptionally well with Williams' technical-yet-powerful style of drumming. Plus, bassist Tony Newton and keyboardist Alan Pasqua are fine players in their own right. Heck, I had 'Snake Oil' on the brain for weeks after first hearing it. Eventually I obtained copies of 1976's 'Million Dollar Legs,' featuring the same musicians (and some horrible vocals and 'ambient' overdubs), and 1969's 'Emergency,' a seminal fusion album; and yet, I still prefer 'Believe It,' every songs a different groove but the high level of quality the same. Check it out. Submitted by James (Yosemite, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another Lifetime This version of Lifetime did not receive the accolates of the original band. However the tunes by this version of the band are easily more accessible to the average listener. Alan Holdsworth plays the guitar as if he were playing a saxaphone and is the star of the band. The sound is very loud and bombastic. This is a "can"t miss" for those of you about to "Jazz Rock" Submitted by carnevil9 (brooklyn, new york) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.69 Pat Metheny: Richard Bona (vocals); Pat Metheny (guitar); Gregoire Maret (harmonica); Cuong Vu (trumpet); Lyle Mays (keyboards); Steve Rodby (bass instrument); Antonio Sanchéz (drums). The Way Up is the Pat Metheny Group's debut offering for Nonesuch Records. Comprised of a single, sprawling, 68-minute composition by Metheny and Lyle Mays -- divided into four sections on CD -- it is an unprecedented new direction for the band. The lineup is the same as on Speak of Now from 2003 -- Metheny and Mays on keyboards, bassist Steve Rodby, drummer Antonio Sanchéz, and trumpeter/vocalist Cuong Vu. New to the roster is Swiss/American harmonicat Gregoire Maret. While the sound here is instantly recognizable as PMG, it is dazzling and labyrinthine ...

Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right ...
