Personnel: Frank Kimbrough (piano); Ben Allison (bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Recorded on April 15 & 16, 2003. Includes liner notes by Frank Kimbrough. Personnel: Frank Kimbrough (piano); Matt Wilson (drums). Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (04/15/2003-04/16/2003). Photographer: Jimmy Katz. Frank Kimbrough has been a valuable pianist based in the New York area ever since the early '80s. On this CD he is teamed with bassist Ben Allison (who along with Kimbrough co-founded the Jazz Composers Collective and the Herbie Nichols Project) and drummer Matt Wilson. They perform six of the pianist's originals plus "You Only Live Twice" from a James Bond movie and Allison's "Ben's Tune." The music is unpredictable post-bop jazz and it includes "Centering" (which is influenced a little by Thelonious Monk), a piece dedicated to Andrew Hill ("Ode"), the well-titled "Whirl," and "Ghost Dance," which is inspired by the unusual avant-garde music of Annette Peacock. The music on Lullabluebye often sounds simpler than it is, setting impressionistic and sometimes introspective moods and swinging in its own fashion without being overly tied to earlier jazz styles. The three musicians often play as one, although Kimbrough is clearly the leader; it is just that he seems open to the musical suggestions of Allison and Wilson. This is an excellent program of modern jazz that grows in interest with each listen due to its subtlety and quiet surprises. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.78) - 4 1/2 stars out of 5 - "[Kimbrough's] piano style is usually quite impressionistic, suspending chords over simply cut lines. It's a memorable performance on a compelling record." Frank Kimbrough Lullabluebye Songs Lullabluebye Review

Personnel: Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Hank Jones (piano); George Mraz (double bass); Paul Motian (drums, cymbals). Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler. Bringing to mind a superb mix of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, I'm All for You finds forward-thinking saxophonist Joe Lovano expertly balancing heartfelt melodicism and cerebral harmonic improvisation. Easily one of Lovano's most listenable endeavors, the ballads-oriented album pulls no punches and simply allows you to sit back and enjoy a master play at his utter best. Joining him is journeyman pianist Hank Jones, who brings his urbane touch to such classic standards as "Don't ...

Lullabluebye
$13.69 Personnel: Paul Motian (drums); Paul Motian; Bill Frisell (guitar); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone). Recording information: AVATAR Studio, NY (04/2004). Photographer: Robert Lewis . The sum total of the nuanced, elliptical lyricism at the heart of Paul Motian's compositional method can be heard in the opening seconds of "Osmosis Part III," the first track from I Have the Room Above Her. Recorded for ECM -- with producer Manfred Eicher, guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano -- this date is Motian's first as a leader for the label in more than 20 years. This is the same team that recorded the seminal album It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago in 1984. At that time, Lovano and Frisell were just beginning to establish themselves as bandleaders though they had each recorded under their own names. The weight placed on each member of this band ...
