| | Burning Spear Resistance CD Burning Spear Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Burning Spear's 16th release (including compilations, live releases, and dub albums) was his second for indie label Heartbeat and represented a fresh start for the reggae giant. During this time, Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) relocated from his home of Jamaica to Queens, New York with his wife in order to get away from unscrupulous music industry types and to start managing himself. Much like his previous records, Spear surrounded himself with an army of crack studio musicians, including Jamaican instrumental legend Dean Fraser on saxophone.
Much of this album is about Rastafarianism, a subject Spear has devoted significant time to on previous efforts. "Jah Say" and "Jah Feeling" are the most obvious markers of Spear's unwavering faith, but other songs such as the rhythmically bubbling "The Force" and the brassy "We Been There" drive Rodney's points home just as effectively. "Love to You" is the only reggae anachronism, thanks to blues-flavored guitar riffs that play off the song's very unreggae-like horn arrangements. Spear's autonomy paid off as RESISTANCE earned him his first Grammy nomination.
A great pairing of Winston Rodney vocals and horn section. A Grammy nominee, this boasts the added bonus of a wonderful nonpolitical piece "Love to You." [The 2004 edition adds bonus tracks.] ~ Ron Wynn

| | Burning Spear Man In The Hills/Dry & Heavy CD (2003) Remastered
Resistance CD music
$12.65 In his consistently excellent musical output, and his unflagging political and spiritual concerns, Burning Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) is one of reggae's definitive roots artists. While his landmark release MARCUS GARVEY, released in 1975, is the best place to start, this superb twofer, which combines 1976's MAN IN THE HILLS with 1977's DRY AND HEAVY on one disc, is a fine second choice.
Rodney's '70s albums are arguably his best: with their stripped down aesthetic and musical backing from consummate session players Sly and Robbie. Both records uphold the standard of the era; although many of the lyrics on MAN IN THE HILLS take an unusual autobiographical turn when Rodney sings of his upbringing in Jamaica, there are plenty of conscious messages, and the rhythms bubble and percolate. DRY & HEAVY features remakes of several songs from Rodney's Studio One days, which improve on the originals in both ...

$9.69 Notorious Puerto Rican heroin dealer Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) is released from jail on a technicality thanks to the manipulations of his sleazy lawyer buddy (Sean Penn). Instead he finds himself back in trouble as a result ...
| | Burning Spear Live In Paris, Zenith '88 CDs (1989)
Resistance songs
$12.35 Winston Rodney's (aka Burning Spear) first live waxing remains as righteous a live reggae disc you're ever gonna feast upon. Well, this recent live double shot is hardly its predecessor's equal, but Rodney is still one of the truly great voices in reggae. So even when the going gets rough, or boring, or meanders into Jah oblivion, he's still worth the price of admission. His new band (complete with all-female horn section) is a tightly skanking bunch of bohunks who negotiate the labyrinthine rhythmic pulsation with grace and panache. And while the material here is no match for earlier stuff like "Marcus Garvey," "Slavery Days" and "Man in the Hills," it stacks up well by comparison, especially "Spear Burning" and "Creation Rebel." ~ John Dougan, Option

$9.29 THIS IS CRUCIAL REGGAE's Peter Broggs installation collects 12 tracks from a Jamaican singer clearly devoted to a classic roots reggae style full of sinuous grooves and devout Rastafarian themes. | | Hills Have Eyes DVD (2006) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; Unrated
Resistance CD music
$9.69 With his 2006 remake of Wes Craven's 1977 slasher THE HILLS HAVE EYES, French director Alexandre Aja manages to accomplish what many directors fail to do by making his film a definite improvement over the original. With Craven on board as producer, Aja sticks pretty closely to the first film's script and storyline, but with the help of a larger budget, special effects, better actors, and slick cinematography, creates a much scarier story. While the film's setting is contemporary, it maintains a 1970s feel in parts, paying tribute to the decade in which the slasher subgenre was born. With an interesting opening-credit sequence consisting of actual nuclear testing footage, we are told that the film's desert setting was the site of nuclear testing during the 1950s and ‘60s. Warned to vacate, the miners that lived there refused to leave, thus subjecting themselves ...

Frank Zappa carved out an eccentric niche for himself in the rock history books, and this compilation album presents some of the highlights of his career spread over 15 tracks.
Even though Zappa purists tend to loathe this splendid 19-track compilation, there is no better introduction to the wild and wonderful world of Frank Zappa than STRICTLY COMMERCIAL. Throughout his long, celebrated career, Zappa essentially maintained two separate personas. At one end of the spectrum, he was a wicked satirist who performed such bizarre rock ditties as "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" and "Dancin' ...
