Contains a Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker/Monks Of Doom discography.
"Good Guys and Bad Guys," the opener on Camper Van Beethoven's self-titled third album, is one of those songs that makes you feel like you're 16, in love, tan, carefree, and intoxicated. For anyone interested in accessing these feelings regularly, CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN is worth purchasing for this track alone. Fortunately, there is plenty of other fun to be had here (and if this eclectic California ensemble is anything, it's fun). Country, ska, punk, folk, Balkan dance, and experimental noise are mixed with art-school ambition and grade-school levity in a way that somehow works, and is all the more appealing for its originality.
The pell-mell explosion of "Surprise Truck," the twangy political allegory of "Joe Stalin's Cadillac," and the reverent, sonically remarkable cover of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" shift gears with zany aplomb. The band moves from minstrel-like twee ("Folly") to crunchy rock song ("Shut Us Down") in the blink of an eye. Singer/guitarist David Lowery, violinist Jonathan Segal, and the rest of the motley crew are in fine, shape-shifting form here. This album represents the band at its most eclectic, before they streamlined their sound in the major-label releases that followed.
Recorded at Fox Studio, Felton, California in May & June, 1986.

Camper Van Beethoven album
$8.85 After a couple albums and EPs on independent labels, Camper Van Beethoven made the step up to the majors with 1988's OUR BELOVED REVOLUTIONARY SWEETHEART. With their judicious mix of electric and acoustic instruments, the songs are uniformly rich and warm. This album introduced some of their finest songs, including "Eye Of Fatima," "She Divines Water," and "My Path Belated." Their half-glimpsed lyrics employ oblique poetics and humor in equal measure, adding up to a winning mix of inviting sadness and gritty hope. David Lowery's everyman-style voice is the perfect tourist in their land of semi-exotic settings--far eastern colors hop into the backseat of a rock & roll jalopy and motor around eastern Europe. This a fine and punchy quintet, unobtrusively produced and a joy to play loud. Victor Krummenacher's bass playing is solidly inventive throughout, and Jonathan Segel's violin is the icing on the cake.
Engineers: John Beverly Jones, Dennis Herring.
Camper Van Beethoven: David Lowery (vocals, guitar); Greg Lisher (guitar); Jonathan Segel (guitar, mandolin, citern, piano, keyboards); Victor Krummenacher (bass); Chris Pedersen (drums).
Additional personnel: C. "Dixie" Kupps (harmonica, bells, programming); Hammer Smith (harmonica); Dave Costanza (trumpet); Katl B. Traler (trombone); Davey Faragher (programming, background vocals).

Camper Van Beethoven CD music
$8.65 The darkness touched on in OUR BELOVED REVOLUTIONARY SWEETHEART is embraced fully on this, Camper Van Beethoven's final album. The instrumental "Opening Theme" introduces new member violinist Morgan Fichter (who replaced departing multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Segel). This is followed by "Jack Ruby," as haunting a song as you've ever heard graced with lovely "oohs" and "aahs." As is his wont, David Lowery sings the song's half-glimpsed but ever-riveting imagery like an angered next-door neighbor.
"When I Win The Lottery" sums up their attitude of dark hopefulness. The band's cover of the old Status Quo hit, "Pictures Of Matchstick Men," afforded them some airplay, but alas, they disbanded the following year. Lowery reemerged thereafter with the slightly more mainstream Cracker, while some of the others headed further off the road with the Monks of Doom. Camper Van Beethoven maintained very high standards throughout their half a decade of life, and they went out in fine style.
Camper Van Beethoven: David Lowery (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Greg Lisher (vocals, guitar); Morgan Fichter (vocals, violin); Victor Krummenacher (vocals, bass); Chris Pederson (vocals, drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Garth Hudson (vocals, pump organ); Tim "SteelBone" Cook (pedal steel); Don V. Lax (fiddle, strings); Hammer Smith (harmonica); Davey Faragher, Danny Faragher, Mary O'Neil, Wally Sound (background vocals).

Camper Van Beethoven music CDs
$10.59 Camper Van Beethoven's 1985 debut was like nothing else going on around it. Opening like a Tex-Mex band, they head into country & western, Middle Eastern, psychedelia, inscrutable catchy pop, and more. The stylistic development of the band and its members can be heard right here--four more Camper Van Beethoven albums came out (not including posthumous releases and odds 'n' ends collections) before the group splintered into Cracker and the Monks Of Doom. David Lowery's deadpan delivery downplays some of the materials inherent humor. But the humor never obscures the strong musical basis for everything they do. This album is highly recommended, as is their final release, KEY LIME PIE.

Camper Van Beethoven songs
$10.85 All songs written or co-written by members of Camper Van Beethoven except "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" (Ray Davies), "Porpoise Mouth" (Joe McDonald), "Six More Miles To The Graveyard" (Hank Williams) and "Photograph" (George Harrison/Richard Starkey).
CAMPER VANTIQUITIES contains cover songs, outtakes and demos recorded between 1984 and 1988, along with all of the band's 1987 EP, VAMPIRE CAN MATING OVEN. It also includes track-by-track annotations and discographies for Camper Van Beethoven, Monks Of Doom, Cracker and Jonathan Segel.
CAMPER VANTIQUITIES is a collection of rarities, outtakes, and B-sides (including the excellent VAMPIRE CAN MATING OVEN EP), and is compiled from material recorded in the mid-1980s (but released by IRS in '93). Nevertheless, it displays a focus and sophistication (especially in the significant songwriting chops of David Lowery) not evident on the band's earlier, zanier releases. In this way, the album looks ahead to the clarity Camper would achieve on OUR BELOVED REVOLUTIONARY SWEETHEART and KEY LIME PIE.
"Never Go Back" and "Seven Languages" show Lowery's development in the way the songs marry narrative to hooks. The lazy country of "Guardian Angels," the electro-new wave of "Ice Cream Everyday," and the warped, Eastern European folk of "Processional" prove the band had lost none of its facility for stylistic whiplash. Titles like "We Workers Do Not Understand Modern Art" and "We Eat Your Children" confirm that the band's quirky humor is fully intact. CAMPER VANTIQUIES is an intriguing sampler of a band en route from slap-dash underground beginnings to establishing an assured voice.

| | Camper Van Beethoven II & III CD (1986) Bonus Tracks
Camper Van Beethoven album
$10.59 Contains a Camper Van Beethoven/Monks Of Doom/Cracker Discography.
California underground ragamuffins Camper Van Beethoven represented one of the last gasps of indie rock before it was subsumed by the shadow of corporate interest and re-dubbed "alternative" music. With their combination of punk-rock edge, stoner/surfer ethos, and Eastern European folk influence (courtesy of Jonathan Segal's searing violin), CVB was an archetypal "alternative" rock band.
The group's freewheeling, style-splice aesthetic is on the group's second effort, confusingly titled II & III, with the parodic, sing-song "(Don't You Go To) Goleta," straight country ("Sad Lover's Waltz"), experimental noise rock ("Cattle [Reversed]"), and the minor-key indie punch of "We're A Bad Trip." With guitarist/singer David Lowery's evolving songwriting and Camper's trademark offbeat humor (one of their songs is called "ZZ Top Goes To Egypt"), II & III keeps listeners guessing (and listening).

Camper Van Beethoven CD music
$56.89 Includes both stereo and mono versions of the USA-only albums MEET THE BEATLES (1964), THE BEATLES' SECOND ALBUM (1964), SOMETHING NEW (1964), and BEATLES '65 (1964), and a 60 page booklet including rare photos and select quotes from John, Paul, George and Ringo.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Although America wasn't the first to catch on to the Beatles, it certainly gave the Fabs a worldwide stage from which to launch their pop music invasion. During the space of 12 months in 1964, Capitol released four Beatles LPs that reshuffled various British Parlophone LPs, EPs, and singles. The result of this rejiggering was four unique titles that, along with those famed Ed Sullivan performances, were the introduction to this global phenomenon for millions in the United States. For the 40th anniversary of these releases, this 2004 set represents the first time these titles were ever available on CD, and features both mono and stereo (or "duophonic") versions of all the songs.
Because of the Beatles' enthusiasm, high standards, and synergy, these evergreen tracks crackle and burn, guaranteeing giddy, joyous memories for some, while also enlisting new fans. Among the many classics are the groundbreaking single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and other romantic rockers ("I Saw Her Standing There," "She Loves You," "All My Loving"), as well as cover tunes ("Long Tall Sally," "Roll Over Beethoven") and lesser-known songs ("Any Time at All," "I'll Follow the Sun"). The boys had been tirelessly working the nightclub trenches for a number of years prior to these albums, but, in truth, John, Paul, George, and Ringo were just getting started.
