Boy, does this band have a great guitar sound. Big, thick, and richly nuanced, they occupy a space somewhere between the mindless heaviosity of metal and the pseudo-intellectual grandeur of prog rock. Tom Englund's voice is similarly flexible, moving from a guttural roar one moment to an operatic, chesty bellow the next. Tilting things a bit to the prog rock side is the fact that this is a concept album, a song cycle based on the story of a person who is lured into a religious cult, stripped of his personality and self-respect, and then rejected and left alone again. The songs are tied together by a thread of spoken word sermonizing by a voice that represents the cult's leader. While it's not always clear to what degree Evergrey are criticizing mindless fanaticism and to what degree they're simply ridiculing religious belief of any kind ("Led to believe in a truth that was false/Truth builds on greed and the faith of the weak...Stupid of me to believe in your hypocrisy"), this isn't a mean-spirited album. There's a gentle, almost tender beauty to several of these songs, and the others build to the kind of big, cathartic climax that fans of Queensr˙che will likely find irresistible. Not bad at all. ~ Rick Anderson

Inner Circle Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Inner Circle CD Awesome and passionate..as expected. Submitted by Arrowink66 (Albuq, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Dark, Heavy, Melodic, Brilliant The Inner Circle is Evergreys most polished, and also heaviest work to date.
The riffs are hard and distinctivly dark, especially when combined with the backing strings. The perfect album when you want something a little "progressive" but also dark and hard, without a hint of cheese.
The final track "When the Walls go Down" gives me chills every time, fantastic voice acting and and ending that must be heard to be beleived. Submitted by haxor (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Inner Circle album
$14.55 The truth is out there. Evergrey's new album does have strong X-Files leanings. In fact, it is a concept album that deals with alien abduction. Rather than addressing the subject in a cheesy sort of universal mode, though, it is the story of one man's struggle to understand what is happening to him. The lyrics, and the strong delivery by vocalist Tom S. Englund, convey the confusion, fear, and sense of helplessness splendidly. And yes, there is also music. Actually, the music is very strong and powerful progressive metal -- think Queensryche, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond all rolled together. The instrumentation really adds to the storyline. At times it emphasizes, ...
| | Evergrey Recreation Day CD (2003) Limited Edition
Inner Circle CD music
$15.39 Sweden's Evergrey figure among a rare breed of progressive metal bands capable of balancing their undeniably impressive musicianship and lofty song and lyric-writing ambitions with the commitment to serving a song's best interest, not their own individual instrumental prowess. More unique yet is their heavy reliance on power metal -- often the most predictable and repetitive of metal subgenres -- for much of their sonic imprint, as they effortlessly integrate its best elements into their inventive compositions. Arguably their most consistent and rewarding to date, the group's stellar fourth album Recreation Day fleshes out what few forced experiments had tarnished earlier works into a strong and cohesive set from start to finish. Singer/guitarist Tom Englund wisely eschews the operatic excesses employed by many of his peers, both in the progressive and power metal fields; yet his range is quite impressive, ranging from delicately emotive melodies (particularly on the beautiful "Madness Caught Another Victim") to spitting fury ...

Inner Circle album
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing ...
