Asleep at the Wheel alumnus Cindy Cashdollar shows she's the equal of any male in her field, and on Slide Show, she pays tribute to some of the people and styles that have influenced her during her outstanding career. Listen to "Twin Guitar Special," where she handles a pedal steel with all the deftness and melodicism of the great Leon McAuliffe on a piece of classic Western swing. But she's just as comfortable playing a lap steel or resophonic slide, as on the title cut, where she duets with Steve James to brilliant effect. She shows her dobro skills on the classic "Milk Cow Blues" accompanied by John Sebastian on vocals, harmonica, and second dobro (and sounding better than he has in years). There are plenty of other guests (including Marcia Ball, Johnny Nicholson, and Jorma Kaukonen, among others), but the undoubted star of the show is Cashdollar herself, switching instruments with remarkable deftness, and showing an inventiveness and sense of melody and timing that's often staggering. Without a doubt, the world needs more like her. ~ Chris Nickson

A Great CD! If you are a Cindy Cashdollar fan, this is a must! Cindy does a great job spanning several genres with her dobro and steel playing from modern to country to blues. The CD is worth the tracks played by the guest artists alone. If you are a steel guitar and dobro fan, this CD will not dissappoint you. Queen Of The Slide Show If you are into slide or steel guitar, you should get this album! From the great song selections to the awesome guest list to Cindy's superb musical senses, this album has it all. I recently had the pleasure of seeing Cindy in concert with Dave Alvin, and this album lets me relive that experience and then some. Submitted by Fred (Olathe, KS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Slide Show
$9.15 Amiable neo-traditional folkies Two High String Band meander their way through 12 gently heartfelt tunes on their second album, Insofarasmuch. The spirit of Norman Blake sails markedly through these recordings, surfacing quite literally on the tribute "Thanks Norman," which embodies the folk legend's warm picking style and friendly sense of melody. Bassist Bryn Bright (who has worked with Old & In the Way) bounces playfully through the John Hartford tune "You Can't Run Away from Your Feet" and she joins with her husband, mandolin player Billy Bright, for some earthy harmonies on "Bunkhouse Blues." Vassar Clements and Peter Rowan make guest turns on the album, but the real stars are the songs themselves -- each one a little bluegrass gem, lovingly crafted by Bryn and Billy Bright into homemade jams that spread so easily on a Sunday morning. ~ Zac Johnson

$10.79 These radio transcriptions made for Jerry King and KFWB in 1934 and 1935 are among the earliest recordings by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, done at about the same time as their first 78s for Decca Records. Rogers was still known as Leonard Slye at the time, a 22 year old from Ohio who had moved to Southern California and formed the Pioneers with Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer only a couple years prior to the Decca deal. The group added fiddler Hugh Farr shortly before these recordings were made, and he figures prominently in the instrumental arrangements here, as does his brother, guitarist and vocalist Karl Farr, who appears on the later batch of transcriptions. It was a time in American radio when stations were reluctant to play commercial 78s for fear that free transmissions would impact street sales of the record, a concept that seems a bit foolish today, but was a very real perception in the late '30s. Artists got around the problem by doing special recordings that were used only for radio use, and these "transcriptions" were never mass pressed for commercial ...
