| | Gonzalo Rubalcaba Mi Gran Pasion CD Gonzalo Rubalcaba Discography of CDs
This is Gonzalo Rubalcaba's debut release. Personnel: Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano, keyboards); Lazaro Cruz (trumpet, flugelhorn); Reinaldo Melian (trumpet); Rafael Carrasco (flute, tenor saxophone); Felipe Cabrera (bass); Horacio Hernandez (drums); Robert Vizcaino (percussion). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg in July 1987. Featured on this CD is Gonzalo Rubalcaba's Grupo Projecto, a Cuban septet with trumpeter Reinaldo Meliani, Rafael Carrasco on tenor and flute, trumpeter Lazaro Cruz, bassist Felipe Cabbera, drummer Horacio Hernandez, and percussionist Roberto Vizcaino. Rubalcaba pays tribute to the music of his father's era, in the style that was popular in Cuba in the 1950s. Five of the six selections are by the artist, but he often quotes extensively from the music of the time period, plus, on "Recordando a Tschaikowsky," classical themes. The colorful arrangements, three skillful horns, and Rubalcaba's creative playing make this a particularly delightful release. ~ Scott Yanow A pianist of virtuosic technique and high visibility (he is a fixture at major jazz festivals and recorded for Blue Note throughout the 1990s), Gonzalo Rubalcaba mixes traditional Latin styles, modern jazz, and classical flourishes to achieve a sound that is dazzling, unique, and frequently danceable. MI GRAN PASION, originally released in 1987 and re-issued in 2004, draws heavily on the danzon--a traditional Cuban dance, popular in the '50s, that fuses Cuba's folk melodies with European harmonic structure and African polyrhythms. For a record of "traditional" music, MI GRAN PASION is remarkably eclectic. Quick as a blink, Rubalcaba can shift gears from delicate lyricism a la Bill Evans to majestic, Beethoven-esque rumbles and chordings to funky, deep Latin grooves, peeling off dense, fluidly improvised solos all the while. Aided by a crack band of horns (which replace the traditional role of violins in the danzon) and rhythm players (the bassist and percussionists here add as much orchestral color as groove), Rubalcaba resurrects the danzon with a postmodern twist on this excellent, one-of-a-kind recording. Mi Gran Pasion
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Mi Gran Pasion
$15.49 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings to become a first-class jazz singer in her ...
| | Ted Nash Mancini Project CD (2008)
Mi Gran Pasion
$13.65 Personnel: Ted Nash (alto flute, piccolo); Frank Kinbrough, Frank Kimbrough (piano); Rufus Reid (upright bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (12/18/2007/12/19/2007). One of the greatest movie composers is the late Henry Mancini, whose works adorn four decades' worth (from the '50s through the '80s) of good to great films. Jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, whose father Dick and uncle Ted frequently worked with Mancini, has now fashioned an exemplary tribute to him called, fittingly enough, THE MANCINI PROJECT. (While not strictly speaking a jazz composer, Mancini drew upon jazz for inspiration and featured several fine jazz soloists.) Here, the younger Nash has arranged 14 Mancini gems for small group, featuring his poised flute and fine, hearty, occasionally breathy tenor sax. Above all, Nash clearly loves the Hollywood composer's melodies, such as the sleek "Dreamsville" ...

$9.59 I never met Barry White...I came very close to meeting andI even 'shared a moment' with 'the Maestro' but we nevermet up close.I used to practice with his 'Love UnlimitedOrchestra' at a rehearsal 'apartment' on Sunset Boulevardin Hollywood...There was so much excitement in that environment...Two drummers, who were sync-ed so well that they played as one,...four guitarists...and a bunch of otherexcellent musicians. Barry would come by sometimes but justto observe and explain which changes needed to be made...I had no chance to meet him there. One day, while I was singing at my own recording session atLarrabee Recording Studios (West Hollywood, back when theyonly had one location...now they have four)...I was shockedwhen the outer door of the console room began to open rightin the middle of my song. I wondered,..."Who could be sooblivious to recording studio etiquette that they wouldenter a "live" session even while the large, red lightindicated 'STOP!!!!'" I began to get upset when I first noticed the intrusion but I had to keep my cool because Ididn't want to affect the creative flow of my performance. The door continued to open...I was in the bullet-proofglass, sound-proofed recording chamber so I was helpless asto preventing whoever it was from coming in...When the trespasser was finally revealed, I was relieved, excitedand energized by the presence of one of my musical heroes, Barry White.I continued singing, noticeably affected in an exhileratedfashion...he snapped his fingers to the beat, began to taphis feet and totally got into my groove...It was such an honor to entertain Barry White...It was like retribution, payback for the many times he had performed for, andinspired me.On this album, I dedicate the song "For The VeryFirst Time" to none other than the recently departed BarryWhite...The song, although an original ...
