| | Assemblage 23 Defiance CD (2002)
Re:Vision CD music
$12.95 Welding together dance beats, slick melodies, and moody vocals, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear crosses the catchy synth pop of Depeche Mode with the dark grooves of industrial on Defiance. Always danceable, always a little disturbing, tracks like "Opened" never lose their pulsating momentum, while grittier numbers like "Drive" skillfully echo New Order by pairing bittersweet synthesizer swells with relentless electro groans. "Cocoon," one of the slowest tracks on the album at 81 beats per minute, is spare, scary, and dreamy. "Maps of Reality" is just the opposite -- fast, on the edge, virtually out of control. Defiance might seem a little repetitive to average rock & roll fans, but for listeners looking to return to ...
| | Imperative Reaction Redemption CD (2004)
Re:Vision music CDs
$13.89 Imperative Reaction have defined a progressive electro sound in previous releases Eulogy for the Sick Child and Ruined. Redemption builds on the electro dancefloor direction set by Ruined while continuing to incorporate synth pop elements. Imperative Reaction posit an electro and lyrical style that simultaneously refers back to their former harshness while balancing smoother dance elements of acts such as Seabound, but there are new traces of aggression in the vocals and a renewed urgency in the layered melodies. The seamless fusion of a hard electro style and traces of pop is an ambitious direction that Imperative Reaction continue to bind together into a concise whole. With this method in hand, Imperative Reaction construct the sculptures of disappointment and broken relationships. "Arrogance" proves an angry opening that harks back to earlier and angrier days before drifting into a smoother electro pole with tracks like "Giving in to Change"'s direct pop feel, or "Faded into One"'s layered dance tone. The tone drifts and settles well prior to the halfway mark -- from there, expect few surprises. Imperative Reaction do not seem to mind repeating and revising their formula of former success, with the strong parallels between Redemption and Ruined continuing right down the inclusion of a single female vocal track ("Maladay") proving more upbeat that its predecessor ("Disoriented"). Redemption is not an experimental release, delivering instead on all former promises and progressing the act's solid musical ...
| | Assemblage 23 Storm CD (2004)
Re:Vision songs
$13.89 With his previous two records, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear has proven to be one of the most consistent artists in EBM. Though it varies little from Defiance and is just a notch below Failure in terms of impact, Storm can certainly stand on its own. The lyrics are just as powerful as anything Shear has written and, set to cosmic synth and propulsive dance beats, they create an emotional tidal wave of pain and loss. The encompassing "Human" begins the album with the words "There have been times throughout my life when I fell so far/I thought I'd never stand again/I watched my dreams depart." From there, Storm doesn't let up. Shear sometimes recycles his own phrases ("endless loop," "chaos rains"), but it's hardly an issue when the music is this strong. And though "Let the Wind Erase Me" is the first single, any of these ten tracks are just as worthy of that honor. "I feel insignificant, never have I ever felt so small," Shear bellows ...

| | Roots Tipping Point CD (2004) Import
Re:Vision album
$11.65 Since their inception, Philadelphia's Roots could always be counted on to expand the edges of hip-hop. PHRENOLOGY marked the height of the troupe's experimentation with punk breaks, long jazz loops, and raps ranging from the hardcore to the whimsical. For that album's follow-up, THE TIPPING POINT, the outfit smoothes off some of the edges for a more conventional rap release, but as it's a Roots record, the result is still resoundingly innovative.
When the theme from the TV show KNIGHT RIDER is inserted into "Don't Say Nuthin'," what ensues is a sinister sonic landscape. When the Roots throw in a previously mined sample, as with Al Hirt's "Harlem Hendo" on "Stay Cool," they twist it around and break it down in a manner no other artist would even imagine. Meanwhile, Black Thought, that MC of immeasurable coolness, flies fancifully over the beats and grooves with the greatest of ease, flexing his muscle on "Web" and laying back on "I Don't Care." THE TIPPING POINT is a simple outing by Roots standards, but still a refreshing and remarkable album.
