LOVE IS HELL includes the EPs LOVE IS HELL PART 1 and PART 2, available together on 1 CD.
The confusing, complex saga of LOVE IS HELL--initially rejected by the label, then begrudgingly issued as two EPs before it finally saw the light of day as a full album--would be just an interesting footnote if not for the shockingly high quality of the material itself. In between his incarnations as alt-country troubadour and Strokes-friendly garage-rocker, Ryan Adams turned out what just might be the best record of his career. A beautiful, bittersweet journey through heartbreak, it's a ballad-heavy album that bears echoes of Jeff Buckley and Britpop acts from the Smiths to Coldplay. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Smiths producer John Porter is on hand to assist the formerly earthy Americana artist in his transition to fragile, melodic, Anglo-adoring balladeer. While the original EPs were weighty documents in and of themselves, LOVE IS HELL's full-length version bears an even greater emotional impact, as the mood is allowed to establish itself gradually and dramatically, pulling the listener into a very personal world of gorgeously observed romantic tragedy.
A compilation of both of the previously available EP's with one track added ("Anybody Wanna Take Me Home") to create the original album Adams delivered to his label before he went back to re-record "Rock n Roll".

Mr. Adams at his best...
This album defines and sets Ryan Adams apart from his normal Alt-Country scenery. Sure, Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights were great albums, but Love Is Hell transcends music genres altogether and enters the world of genuine, honest music. If you found Ryan & The Cardinals to be a little too twangy, buy this album and listen for the the wide range of emotion poured into the song writing, not to mention a totally new and different/distinct sound from his previous and present work. A truly definitive album and a must have for a rainy evening.

Adams is annoyingly uneven with his albums.
You can skip his lame acoustic stuff (Cold Roses I, Demolition, etc.), which feature generic or non-existant melodies, sloppy arrangements and minimal production values. It's almost as if he wrote the songs 10 minutes before getting to the recording studio and never fleshed them out.
However, his electric stuff (Love is Hell, Gold, Cold Roses II) is much more interesting -- the songs are fully developed and arranged, with some tasty licks that show he actually put some effort into his work.

Belgium’s Hometown Gamblers burst onto the music scene in 1998 when brothers Guy and Yves De Caluwé decided to set up a rockabilly band. Yves and Guy were hooked to rockabilly and rock n’ roll music ever since they were youngsters. Their father’s record collection and also the influence of their good friend Rockin’ Rudy, a famous DJ in the rockabilly music scene, helped them to dig deeper into roots music. The guys recognize their roots from a wide field of good and real music - country, western swing, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock'n roll and rockabilly. Artists like Johnny Horton, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette trio and many more changed their life forever. In the early years of the Hometown Gamblers, the line-up changed a few times but in the year 2002 everything fall into place when the right people were found. It soon became clear that there was no place for drums in the band. Thin Lizzy was a great band and Phil Lynott, the songwriter behind it, was a kind of visionary, pioneering a poetic, working-class aesthetic later echoed in his American counterpart, Bruce Springsteen, while also leading the group's various lineups through a staggering number of great guitarists, highlighted by the triple-attack of the Jailbreak era. Way back in 1985, before the CD revolution truly kicked in, Atlantic released the monumental archival project Atlantic Rhythm & Blues: 1947-1974, a seven-volume set of double-albums chronicling the label's crucial role in the development of R&B and soul. Over the course of that set (later condensed to eight CDs) it was possible to hear the music develop from blues into a soul -- an impressive feat as a sheer compilation, one that is even more stunning when it's considered that it all came from one label and its subsidiaries. Atlantic Rhythm & Blues did the job so well that the 2007s set Atlantic Soul: 1959-1975 can't help but pale a little in comparison, as it lacks both the scope and historical heft of its predecessor. Then again, Atlantic Soul doesn't try to supplant Atlantic Rhythm & Blues -- as produced and compiled by Billy Vera, it's intended as a supplement, a way to expand upon the story, fill in a few holes, explore hidden byways left behind by the first set. It's for collectors and fanatics, which should be evident by the very fact that it's released as a limited edition on Rhino Handmade, not a full-fledged release from the boutique imprint's parent label. That very audience should find Atlantic Soul enormously satisfying, although they may still have a few quibbles with some of the details. Some might find the opening triptych from Ray Charles, LaVern Baker & Jimmy Ricks, and Ben E. King to be a shade too heavy on strings, jazz and big bands -- music that sets the stage for '60s soul, yet not quite belonging to it -- some might find this too heavy on covers (albeit good, interesting ones) of pop hits by soul bands, but most will likely wonder why such staples as Otis' "Hard to Handle" and Aretha's "I Say a Little Prayer," King Floyd's "Groove Me," and the Persuaders' "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" are here, as they don't quite fit among the obscure gems that comprise the heart of this set.
