(1 Customer Review)
TRIAL OF THE CENTURY was the breakthrough release by New York indie rockers the French Kicks, after some low-key EPs and a full-length debut. It was a success in part because, in 2004, the time was right for the French Kicks' blend of new-wave synths and urgent indie-rock drive, following the success of bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand. But the album shine on its own merits, too, and was an enormous step forward from their previous work.
Starting with the glorious single "One More Time," a pulsating dance-rock gem with a yearning chorus, TRIAL OF THE CENTURY is a self-confident, playful album full of solid pop hooks delivered with casually stylish grace and nervy intensity. The French Kicks may be the Cars of the new-wave revival, and TRIAL OF THE CENTURY is their HEARTBEAT CITY.

Entertainment Weekly (p.165) - "[T]his Brooklyn band has moved on to a style of a later vintage: new-wave pop that doles out melancholy, grandeur, and groove in equal doses." - Grade: B Magnet (p.92) - "[Their] newly minted prissiness gives the twinkly keyboard and tangled guitar of 'Oh Fine' and the mock-pimp circumstance of 'Was It A Crime' a starry-eyed sensuality..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] bittersweet urban pop thrill, a brightly lit beacon for insomniac romantics everywhere....These 11 songs exude a finely crafted sophistication as pulsing grooves and crystalline melodies follow singer Nick Stumpf in and out of love." Trial Of The Century music CDs
$11.39 A rock revivalist opus similar to those by the Strokes and Stripes, the Walkmen's sophomore effort is a genuine rock "album" in the traditional sense: each song is unique to the others and it all fits together as a cohesive work of art. Instant classics include "The Rat," with vocalist Hamilton Leithauser screaming out with so much lonely rage that two tracks later (on "Little ...

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Trial Of The Century CD music
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been ...
| | A Band Of Bees Sunshine Hit Me CD (2002)
Trial Of The Century music CDs
$14.15 The Bees prance around the same psychedelic pop themes and tones of the Beta Band on Sunshine Hit Me. But somehow they take things to a whole other level, as their familiarity with vintage instruments and addictive laid-back swagger help them avoid the pretension that sometimes follows the Beta Band. Where the Isle of Wight duo's peers might name-check the Beach Boys, the Bees simply use them as a subtle starting point. Gentle harmonies mix perfectly with ornate horns that seem straight off a Stereolab album. It's hard to say what's more compelling about the great "Punchbag": Is it the lyric "I'm too much for caged monkeys" or the utterly warped beat that shuffles back on itself like a stoned boxer? The Bees don't linger in one musical genre like so many neo-psychedelic ...

| | Brent Arnold Last Boat CD (2004)
Trial Of The Century album
$10.59 Brent Arnold leads a bit of a musical double life. He splits his time between playing cello and creating lush arrangements for Northwestern indie rockers like Modest Mouse, Mike Johnson, and Sleater-Kinney and playing with avant jazzers like Andrew Drury and Eyvind Kang. On his first album under his own name, he has chosen the former path. Last Boat is a intricately arranged, emotionally charged indie rock record that nimbly straddles the line between Northwest moroseness and chamber pop good cheer. Arnold has a simple, unprepossessing voice that hovers below the intertwining guitars and sawing strings. The band he has assembled is suitably restrained, and their vocal harmonies abet Arnold's cause winningly. ...
| | Minus Story Captain Is Dead, Let The Drum Corpse... CD (2004)
Trial Of The Century CD music
$12.49 Minus Story rock the lo-fi, psychedelic indie rock on their third release, The Captain Is Dead, Let the Drum Corpse Dance, out on Jagjaguwar. To say that the record is completely lo-fi is not entirely correct; Minus Story seem to be experimenting in the studios of The Ministry of Love in Lawrence, KS, and The Christus House & the Shop in Boonville, MO. This record is a mix of lo-fi and high production elements that make up a psychedelic '60s sound that reminds of projects from the Elephant 6 collective such as Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, or Of Montreal. "The Happy Activist" rocks a raw indie punk that rises above as a highlight out of the record and drives along with confidence and heat behind the beat, while maintaining a groove and a warble to keep it trippy. Throughout The Captain Is Dead, Let the Drum Corpse Dance many instruments build up lush layers to enhance the epic nature of the record as a whole -- pianos twinkle, big drums pulse, and backward guitars swirl, rooting Minus Story to the likes of '60s psychedelic pop, Smile-era Beach Boys, and modern influences like the Flaming Lips. There definitely exists a fog ...

Trial Of The Century songs
$18.99 Masayo Ishigure began playing the koto and jiuta shamisen at the age of five in Gifu, Japan. After initial studies with Tadao and Kazue Sawai she became a special research student in 1986 at the Sawai Koto Academy of Music. The aim of the academy was to shed new light on koto music by incorporating everything from Bach to jazz and thus change the koto from being thought of only as a traditional Japanese instrument into an instrument of universal expressiveness. Later Masayo Ishigure became one of a small group of virtuoso disciples of the Sawais and successfully completed the 33rd Ikusei-kai program sponsored by NHK to foster and train aspiring artists in Japanese music. In 1988, Ms. Ishigure received a degree in Japanese Traditional Music at Takasaki Junior Arts College with a concentration on koto and shamisen. The same year she was recorded on the CD entitled "The World of Tadao Sawai". She ...
