| | Carole King Wrap Around Joy CD Carole King Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
A largely under-appreciated gem--by 1974, the singer-songwriter genre was well past its commercial peak--WRAP AROUND JOY was still a commercial success, largely due to the terrific top 10 single "Jazzman." A return to TAPESTRY-style basics after the orchestral experiments of 1973's FANTASY, WRAP AROUND JOY is a bit slicker and fuller than that watershed album. Also, because limits herself to writing only the music, leaving the lyrics to longtime friend David Palmer, there seems to be somewhat less intimacy than listeners will find on more autobiographical albums like MUSIC. On the other hand, this is still a terrific album, with the gently swinging kiss-off "You Go your Way, I'll Go Mine" and the wistful "Change In Mind, Change of Heart" among the highest points.

Wrap Around Joy album
$15.95 Even those who find Barry Manilow's music cringe-worthy are likely to know the chorus to "I Write the Songs," or to recognize the opening bars of "Mandy." That's because Manilow held serious sway over the pop and adult contemporary charts throughout the '70s, ratcheting up an amazing string of hits, most of which became staples of the soft rock canon. It cannot be denied that Manilow is a talented tunesmith capable of crafting powerful melodies, both melancholic and jubilant; and he parlayed this talent into a hugely successful recording and performing career lasting well into the 2000s.
Arista has followed up the blockbuster sales of 2002's ULTIMATE MANILOW by issuing an expanded, two-disc greatest hits compilation dubbed THE ESSENTIAL. Naturally, the mega-hits--"Mandy," "I Write the Songs," "Looks Like We Made It," and the disco anthem "Copacabana"--are here, but there is plenty of fine material spread out over these 34 tracks, including energetic show stoppers from his 1977 live album. Disc two concentrates on the performer's ...
| | Laura Branigan CD (1990)
Wrap Around Joy CD music
$9.69 Short on ideas even with a three-year layoff (they couldn't even think of an album title!), the Laura Branigan brain trust, led by executive producer (and now Warner Music U.S. chairman/CEO) Doug Morris put its faith in drum programs to carry a collection of mediocre originals, a lame cover of Vicki Sue Robinson's dance classic "Turn the Beat Around," and a Bryan Adams castoff. Branigan sang with her usual gusto, but even slick producers like Richard Perry and Peter Wolf couldn't animate the material. Leadoff track "Moonlight on Water" saw a little singles chart action, but Laura Branigan's sixth album was her least successful effort so far, failing to break into the Top 100 best-sellers. ...
| | Laura Branigan Touch CD (1987)
Wrap Around Joy music CDs
$10.65 Laura Branigan's fifth album, Touch, showed signs of maturity as she made a bid (that was not quite successful) for adult contemporary crossover -- a smart chance to take considering the longevity many A/C acts have. Her big, boomy voice is perfect for some of the moody ballads on this collection, such as "Over Love," "Meaning of the Word," and "Spirit of Love," but there are so many of those successfully evocative cuts that the dance songs don't fit as seamlessly as they should. That's not to say the upbeat tracks are not in good shape: The lead single, "Shattered Glass" (produced by Stock, Aitken, Waterman, who produced successful Bananarama and Kylie Minogue singles in the same period), and "Angels Calling" stand out; you can hardly hold back from caroling along. Synthesizer-heavy throughout, on both the slow and fast songs, the strings on the yearning "Cry Wolf" near the end of the album are welcome. The lyrics on many of the cuts are poetic and adult, making this atmospheric collection the best product she'd released so far; the material is far better suited to her voice -- which has never sounded better -- than the Europop she recorded prior to this. "The Power of Love" exhibits the weight she can convey in a whisper, while also giving her something to really sink her teeth into. Her voice being her strongest asset, Branigan never received the direction Celine Dion did, so she never achieved the same massive success, though her voice is equal in terms of power, beauty, and distinction. ~ Bryan Buss

| | Jaci Velasquez Love Out Loud CD (2008)
Wrap Around Joy songs
$12.39 It was a pleasing experiment that earned her some of the best reviews of her career, but Beauty Has Grace, Jaci Velasquez's adventuresome ninth album, was the one the masses least cared about: the album sold poorly and it garnered no significant radio hits -- a first for the Christian singer. The album marked the end of Velasquez's Word Records era and sparked a period of soul-searching for the songstress: she weathered a divorce and moved to London in hopes the change of scenery would do her good. Back in Nashville, remarried, and pregnant with her first child, Velasquez went back into the studio to record Love Out Loud, her tenth album and first as an indie. The disc is a return of sorts: she's back to working with former dc Talk producer Mark Heimermann, the guy who spearheaded her first three chart-topping albums. Most importantly, Velasquez is back from her excursion in the realm of Brit-pop, back to what she does best, namely, sprightly Christian pop with dashes of Latin pop thrown in. It's not revolutionary, but it's nonetheless the bubbly Jaci fans have come to know and love. While there's a shortage of her signature ballads, the singer makes up for that with increased input in the songwriting department. To wit, the fierce "It's Not You, It's Me" offers one of the most innermost glimpses into Velasquez, the person, as she waxes confessional about her once strained relationship with her father. From there, the sentiments are more general, more relatable, and the accompanying music is satisfactory, if not a bit demure. That's understandable: Velasquez underwrote the album herself, and it shows in the production, which rarely reaches ...
