Personnel: Terry Blaine (vocals); Mark Shane (piano); Allan Vache (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Ed Polcer (cornet); Tom Artin (trombone); Phil Flanigan (bass); Ed Metz Jr. (drums). Recorded live at Hanse-Merkur Auditorium, Hamburg, Germany on October 11, 1997. Personnel: Terry Blaine (vocals); Mark Shane (piano); Allan Vaché (clarinet); Ed Polcer (cornet). Terry Blaine, who has a deep and husky voice, is a superior singer of swing standards, one with perfect time who is always in tune and swings in a soulful fashion. She does not copy any of her predecessors and is creative within the vintage style. On this set, a reissue of a 1997 concert that has been expanded with the addition of six "new" selections from the same performance, Blaine and her longtime accompanist, pianist Mark Shane, create plenty of musical magic. The sextet is excellent, with cornetist Ed Polcer in particularly inspired form and some good spots along the way for Ken Peplowski (particularly on tenor) and the Vic Dickenson-inspired trombone of Tom Artin. With music ranging from a touching version of "They Say That Falling in Love Is Wonderful" to a riotous "Mama Don't Allow," this set is highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow This live set (recorded at Hamburg, Germany) matches together pianist Mark Shane and vocalist Terry Blaine (who are the co-leaders) with the hot cornetist Ed Polcer, trombonist Tom Artin, clarinetist Allan Vache (who doubles a little on tenor), bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Ed Metz, Jr. Although Blaine's husky vocals are musical and swinging (best are "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "St. Louis Blues" and "Mama Don't Allow"), the instrumentals are most memorable. The renditions of "I Never Knew" (which is nearly nine minutes long), the ten-minute version of "I Would Do Most Anything for You," and a speedy "What Is This Thing Called Love" are among the highlights. Polcer in particular is heard throughout in top form, making this a worthwhile acquisition for trad collectors. ~ Scott Yanow Terry Blaine With Thee I Swing! Songs | 1. | I Never Knew |

With Thee I Swing!
$11.69 Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Jim Hall (guitar). Recorded at Soundmakers, New York, New York on April 24 and May 14, 1962. Originally released on United Artists (1500). Includes liner notes by David Rosenthal. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Jim Hall (guitar). Audio Remixer: Ron McMaster. Liner Note Author: David Rosenthal. Recording information: Sound Makers, New York, NY (04/24/1962/05/14/1962). Photographers: Frank Gauna; Charles Stewart. Other than four piano solos from April 4, 1962, this set was pianist Bill Evans' first recordings after a hiatus caused by bassist Scott LaFaro's tragic death in a car accident. The first of two meetings on record in a duo format with guitarist Jim Hall, the collaborations are often exquisite. Both Evans and Hall had introspective and harmonically advanced styles along with roots in hard-swinging bebop. The six selections on the original LP have been expanded to ten for this CD reissue with the inclusion of two alternate takes and previously unheard versions of "Stairway to the Stars" and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." There is more variety than expected on the fine set with some cookers, ballads, waltzes, and even some hints at classical music. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow Occasionally during ...
