This is perhaps one of the most classic big band dates of all time. The original album cover art from 1957 reads: "On the coast, Paich is most. His music makes murals grow in your mind. Paper and pencil are his canvas and brush. Listen: hear colors rush Picasso Of Big-Band Jazz Music Marty Paich Picasso Of Big-Band Jazz Songs Picasso Of Big-Band Jazz Review

| | Duke Ellington Piano In The Background CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Picasso Of Big-Band Jazz music CDs
$7.99 At first glance, one might think that this album is another in a long line of standard-issue Duke Ellington compilations. However, this is a release created by the artist himself, and it presents sessions from May and June of 1960 with one of the best orchestras Ellington ever assembled. (Only the previously unissued "Harlem Air Shaft," one of five bonus tracks on the CD, was recorded in '61.)
The title of this collection is also something of a misnomer, since PIANO IN THE BACKGROUND prominently features the piano throughout. Each track boasts fabulous bluesy piano introductions, and, at the end of each tune, the ivories usually get the last word. This dramatic conclusion sometimes comes in the form of a final blow to the lower register of the keyboard, as ...

| | Blackstreet CD (1994)
Picasso Of Big-Band Jazz music CDs
$12.59 All songs written or co-written by Teddy Riley except "Love's In Need" (Stevie Wonder). Samples include "Outstanding" (as performed by The Gap Band), "Bon Bon Vie (Gimme The Good Life)" (Sandy Linzer/L. Russell Brown), "Papa Don't Take No Mess" (as performed by James Brown) and "Atomic Dog" (as performed by George Clinton).
Having worked with great performers (Michael Jackson to name just one), it is no miracle that producer Teddy Riley once again comes forth with yet another successful act. This time, it's not Guy, or Wreckx-N-Effect; it's Blackstreet, a male R&B group consisting of four members including none other than himself, Teddy Riley. BLACKSTREET, the debut album, is the model example of today's R&B, filled with samples and subliminal reappearances of old school themes.
Recreating one of hip-hop's classics, Blackstreet's version of Redman's "Tonight's Da Night" is a slow grooving love song using the same horn and vocal harmony to create an R&B favorite. Although no group can perfectly match Stevie Wonder's talent on any remake, Blackstreet brings back memories with their version of "Love's In Need Of Love Today." "Booti Call" uses interpolations of George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," questioning the primal male urge ("Why must I feel like that/Why must I chase the cat?"). BLACKSTREET is 20 tracks, either about love or sex, with full intention of setting a mood.
Teddy Riley is an impeccable craftsman and genius of sorts, not to mention a trendsetter. In releasing so much product, ...

$12.35 This is an Enchanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Trumpeter and los Hombres Calientes co-founder Irvin Mayfield's third album for the Basin Street label is an ambitious suite of compositions written in honor of photographer Gordon Parks, whose works were placed on exhibit in the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2000. As might be expected, Mayfield's compositions tend towards the abstract and impressionistic, with moments that draw explicitly on ...
