Recording information: Dave Askren's Living Room (06/21/2001-03/22/2002); Entourage Studios, North Hollywood, CA (06/21/2001-03/22/2002); Sunburst Studios, Culver City, CA (06/21/2001-03/22/2002). Rhubumba may be a nonsensical word, but it is also the name of an excellent Afro-Cuban jazz band led by saxophonist Jeff Benedict. The group is an outgrowth of the musical partnership of Benedict and pianist Paul DeCastro. Gradually expanding over time to a septet, the group welcomes Bobby Shew as their guest trumpeter on several of the selections here. Rhubumba perform five spirited originals by DeCastro and a song apiece by McCoy Tyner, Frank Foster, George Gershwin, Michael Brecker, and Consuelo Velázquez. Along with the full-group features are a playful soprano/piano duet on "Chick's Delight" and DeCastro's unaccompanied piano on "Besame Mucho." Dave Askren takes several notable guitar solos, the percussionists work well with the group, and each player distinguishes himself. Rhubumba is well worth searching for. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.107) - "RHUBUMBA is split between highly original material from pianist De Castro and well-thought-out covers arranged by Benedict." $17.39 with pianist Richie Beirach & drummer Billy Hart, bassist Steve Smith's debut recording features reharmonized standards & several modern jazz compositions by the Richie Beirach, Steve Smith & John Coltrane
Personnel: Steve Smith (acoustic bass); Richie Beirach (piano); Jabali Billy Hart (drums). Includes liner notes by Josef Woodard. Personnel: Richie Beirach (piano); Jaboli Billy Hart (drums). Audio Mixer: Joseph Bartoldus. Liner Note Author: Josef Woodard. Recording information: Sorcerer Sound Studios (03/06/1996-03/07/1996). Arranger: Richie Beirach. Bassist Smith (not the drummer of the same name) presents a straight piano-bass-drums jazz trio, but the music is far from straight-ahead, though it is within the modern mainstream. Pianist Richie Beirach adds both new dimensions and his personal harmonic mysterioso embellishments to four of Smith's originals, three standards, and two zingers. Drummer Billy Hart sounds more inspired here than on any previous recordings. His punctuations and shadings are fresh as ever, working extraordinarily well with Smith, whose deliberate, ...

Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt) ...

Featuring 18 songs, including "The Impossible Dream," "Call Me Irresponsible," and "Lollipops and Roses," Greatest Hits is the definitive Jack Jones collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The early sound of Jack Jones is a mix of Mel Torme's velvet jazz and the mainstream romance of Tony Martin. All tracks have been digitally remastered (24-bit). Recorded at the start of Dinah Washington's climb to fame, 1954's Dinah Jams was taped live in front of a studio audience in Los Angeles. While Washington is in top form throughout, effortlessly working her powerful, blues-based voice on both ballads and swingers, the cast of star soloists almost steals the show. In addition to drummer Max Roach, trumpeter Clifford Brown, and other members of Brown and Roach's band at the time -- tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow -- trumpeters Maynard Ferguson and Clark Terry, alto saxophonist Herb Geller, and pianist Junior Mance also contribute to the session. Along with extended jams like "Lover Come Back to Me," "You Go to My Head," and "I'll Remember April" -- all including a round of solos -- there are shorter ballad numbers such as "There ...
