For WHITE TRASH BEAUTIFUL, Everlast's third album since his reinvention as an acoustic-guitar-slinging storyteller, the former House of Pain member also known as Erik Schrody further embraces his rootsy, down-home leanings. The opening track, "Blinded By the Sun," expertly sets the tone for the album (and proves to be one of its strongest tracks), with a strummed guitar line enhanced by samples from classic rap tunes by Run-DMC and Eric B. & Rakim. Here, as on other cuts, Everlast uses his gravelly voice to evoke the humble dreams and everyday lives of the working class, earning him status as sort of a de facto Bruce Springsteen for the hip-hop set. Although the mood of WHITE TRASH BEAUTIFUL is largely melancholy, Everlast's knack for pop melodies and vintage soul hooks makes the album a strangely uplifting affair.
Personnel: Everlast (vocals); Josh Lopez, Rob Hill (guitar); Alma Cielo (violin); Dante Ross, Zac Rae, Alma Cielo, John Vercessi (organ, keyboards); Chris Thomas , Justin Premino, Dorian Heartsong (bass guitar); Tobias Raulf (drums); Al Pahanish (percussion); Angelo Moore (Theremin); Jenni Fujita, B Real, Carlos Rigas (background vocals).

White Trash Beautiful album
$14.25 "What It's Like" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The former frontman for House of Pain sheds the hip-hop-only mode and steps out into the world of rock with this release. Tapping into the social structure of rock, Everlast keeps his rap credibility but blesses the skateboard kids with r&r vibes, making a brilliant texture of hip-hop beats and six-string melodies. "What It's Like," the album's first single, enjoyed a much-deserved rise towards the top of the charts.

White Trash Beautiful CD music
$14.25 For the follow-up to his breakthrough solo album WHITEY FORD SINGS THE BLUES, the former House Of Pain member continues solidifying the bridge between the worlds of rock and rap. This time out, Everlast revisits his hip-hop roots with a vengeance by loading up this 13-track opus up with plenty of jeep-worthy beats and matter-of-fact, lyrical flow. Setting the pace early on is the minute-and-a-half opening track "Whitey," which finds the gruff-sounding Irishman reasserting his lyrical prowess over a zig-zagging cello.

| | Yazbek Damascus CD (2001)
White Trash Beautiful CD music
$14.49 Clearly David Yazbek is a showman, a theater man. His claim to fame is writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Full Monty. Prior, he wrote comedy for The David Letterman Show. He also has a couple of previous albums to his name. So it should come as no surprise that his album Damascus, well, plays like a musical soundtrack, sans actors' dialogue. The set's opener, "Montgomery, Alabama," fools listeners into thinking, Finally! Some good old-fashioned rock & roll. The song screams with a rollicking piano, horn solos, and a raspy lead vocal by Yazbek. Then "Strange Warm Day" chimes in; it's reminiscent of the Beach Boys' sublime Pet Sounds. On it, Yazbek's voice sounds like a hybrid of Elvis Costello and Brian Wilson. But these two songs are the first and last sign of non-theatrical fare audiences can expect on this disc, where he becomes an amalgam of John Pizzarelli meets Randy Newman. No doubt, Yazbek's voice is lovely. It is warm, mellow, and textured. And his lyrics are witty, satirical, off the beaten path, ...
