Personnel: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, percussion); Kurt Schwitters (vocals); Paul Rudolph (guitar, bass guitar); Phil Manzanera, Robert Fripp, Fred Frith (guitar); Achim Roedelius (piano, electric piano); Mobile Moebius (electric piano); Percy Jones, Bill MacCormick, Brian Turrington (bass guitar); Dave Mattacks, Andy Fraser, Phil Collins, Jaki Liebezeit (drums); Rhett Davies, Shirley Caesar Williams (percussion). Before and After Science is really a study of "studio composition" whereby recordings are created by deconstruction and elimination: tracks are recorded and assembled in layers, then selectively subtracted one after another, resulting in a composition and sound quite unlike that at the beginning of the process. Despite the album's pop format, the sound is unique and strays far from the mainstream. Eno also experiments with his lyrics, choosing a sound-over-sense approach. When mixed with the music, these lyrics create a new sense or meaning, or the feeling of meaning, a concept inspired by abstract sound poet Kurt Schwitters (epitomized on the track "Kurt's Rejoinder," on which you actually hear samples from Schwitters' "Ursonate"). Before and After Science opens with two bouncy, upbeat cuts: "No One Receiving," featuring the offbeat rhythm machine of Percy Jones and Phil Collins (Eno regulars during this period), and "Backwater." Jones' analog delay bass dominates on the following "Kurt's Rejoinder," and he and Collins return on the mysterious instrumental "Energy Fools the Magician." The last five tracks (the entire second side of the album format) display a serenity unlike anything in the pop music field. These compositions take on an occasional pastoral quality, pensive and atmospheric. Cluster joins Eno on the mood-evoking "By This River," but the album's apex is the final cut, "Spider and I." With its misty emotional intensity, the song seems at once sad yet hopeful. The music on Before and After Science at times resembles Another Green World ("No One Receiving") and Here Come the Warm Jets ("King's Lead Hat") and ranks alongside both as the most essential Eno material. ~ David Ross Smith Eno's last glam-pop album before devoting himself entirely to ambient experimentation, BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE showcases two sides of Eno's musical personality. The first half of the disc is characterized by floppy, pop-tinged romps reminiscent of his earlier albums (and heralding later Eno-piloted projects such as the Talking Heads' SPEAKING IN TONGUES). Tunes like "Backwater" and "King's Lead Hat" (a song whose lyrics are reputedly about the Talking Heads, the title an anagram of the band's name) feature bouncy beats and keyboards, silly, riddle-like lyrics and Eno's Muppet-ish vocals. The second half is considerably more subdued: the tender, airy feeling of tracks like "Julie With" and "Spider and I" indicate Eno's softer, abstract, synthesizer-dominated direction. Taken together, the fine tracks of this disc frame two sides of Eno: the pop songster and the ambient composer.Mojo (Publisher) (p.123) - 4 stars out of 5 - "'No One Receiving' and 'Here He Comes' are simply great pop tunes." Brian Eno Before And After Science Songs Before And After Science Music Before And After Science Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Eno's "Other" Masterpiece....... OK, so I made a tiny mistake that fateful day I decided to plunge into Mr. Eno's universe. I picked-up copies of both "Another Green World" & this one, which by most educated accounts, are his two greatest achievements as a solo artist. Neither one of them disappointed me in the slightest, however, after experiencing "Another Green World", "Before & After" comes off as a slightly "decaffeinated", certainly toned-down version of the former. Here, the sides are more clearly drawn; tracks 1-5 are the streamlined, light-weight pop numbers of which, "Another Green World" featured a much smaller dossage of; tracks 6-10 are the heavy-hitters, the more thought provoking and resonant songs that, for me at least, take this record from the realm of very good/ excellent, to undeniably great.
For a comparison point outside of Eno, let's take David Bowie's highly regarded (& some might say, on par) releases from this period, "Low" & "Heroes" (which Eno co-produced). I'm going to say the ambiance of "Before & After" (meaning the 2nd half) isn't quite as ambient as the pertaining moments found on "Low", only executed better & definitely possessing more human quality, vocally. Surprisingly, it's the rather desolate (but totally heart-felt) lyrics of "Julie With" & "Spider & I" that take this one beyond anything that "Low" delivers. The peak moments of this record are greater than the peaks of "Low".
From start to finish, I can find very little faults or weaknesses with the "Heroes" record, as it's arguably the best to come from the second half of that decade. However, you won't find anything on "Heroes" that ventures quite as "deep" into introspection as the songs that make up the second half of "Before & After", they really pack quite the stimulating punch in that regard. As for the pop songs found on each, I can't say that the first half of "Before & After" can even begin to touch material such as "Heroes", "Blackout" or "Sons Of The Silent Age". Bowie had Eno licked there.
So, in summary, "Before & After Science" is totally worthy of the "masterpiece" stamp, totally worthy of inclusion on all those "top 100 of the '70s" lists & absolutely worth checking out. It just might be a good idea however, to save "Another Green World" for a later purchase than this one because what Eno delivered on that record is ultimately, an impossible act to follow. One of Eno's Best Before and After Science is probably Eno's most accessible album. The first half is a mix of quasi rock tunes and lyrics that are intriguing and catchy.
Backwater is an upbeat melody with odd quirky lyrics. The last tune of the first half, King's Lead Hat is a bass driven mover featuring the frenetic guitar work of Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music). The second part of this album is much quieter, fearuring slow introspective pieces. The album ends with Spider and I, a dreamy refection on sound and our place with or without it. If you are not familiar with Eno's work, this is the place to start. You won't regret it. Submitted by catdan5 (Austin, TX USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
