$11.55 A side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who formerly played with synth-poppers Figurine but now records as Dntel, the Postal Service creates bedroom electronica with surprising emotional pull on GIVE UP. Ten tracks lyrically convey both a youthful ennui and the nostalgic ache of longing. Tamborello creates a tense sonic space that allows Gibbard's spare yet careful guitar to occasionally chime ...
| | Big Boys Fat Elvis CD (1993)
Home: Volume V songs
$12.95 Released in conjunction with The Skinny Elvis, Fat Elvis compiles the later Big Boys releases -- Fun, Fun, Fun, Lullabies, and No Matter -- in one handy disc. As with its counterpart, the sound is perfect, the release notes thorough, and the reproductions of the original sleeves welcome. Also in common with Skinny, the best extra fun comes from the liner notes and archival photos. Offering up praise and recollections this time around are, among others, L.A. punk scenester Pleasant Gehman, Steve Albini (combative as always, but unreserved in his Boys worship), Jay Robbins, Sooyoung Park, and Skatemaster Tate. The latter offers a particular funny, brief story about seeing the young Red Hot Chili Peppers open for the Big Boys, dismissing them as "some kind of joke band" -- not too far off an assessment, frankly. Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey tells the lead tale, enthusiastically explaining the Boys' importance to the early Austin, TX punk scene and how the Surfers benefitted from the Boys' help in adding them to bills and providing practice space. The photos cover everything from promo shots, in-studio snaps, live craziness (one pair shows the Boys on stage with Flipper covering Rick James' "Superfreak"), and a slew of flyers. A last mention at the end of the booklet describes the band as "the highest common denominators," ...
| | Libertine See You In The Next Life CD (2000)
Home: Volume V album
$23.29 Libertine displayed a combination of catchy melody and power punk nervousness on its 2000 debut, SEE YOU IN THE NEXT LIFE.
These guys rock, a mix of basic rock & roll, mod, and punk, with a little glam thrown in, that's all about traditional balls-out energy, running guitar leads, and floor-tom pounding breaks. (There's even hand claps and "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon" passages in "Next Life.") When I say "punk," I mean the better, pre-hardcore variety, with first album-Generation X-ish clipped downstrokes and Johnny Thunders-like leads of Jamie Coville's guitar, chops from heavy drummer Stephen Maicior, and Belvy K's growling just out of pitch (and we don't care) vocals that recall a young Mike Ness of Social Distortion. And not only do they borrow Iggy Pop's 1969 Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog" riff for a verse that sounds like 1981 "Magnificent 7" Clash on "No, Your Enemy," but when they close the LP with "The Sound of the Saints," you just know (it's foreshadowed ...
| | Poison Hollyweird CD (2002)
Home: Volume V CD music
$14.55 Say what you will about Poison; these glamour boys are worthy of veteran status, releasing HOLLYWEIRD 15 years after their debut LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN. Poison plays homage to the gritty side of their beloved Hollywood in both "Wishful Thinkin'" and the title track. "Shooting Star," weaves a tale of a small-town girl with stars in her eyes and boasts one of the band's signature gang-vocal choruses (much in the spirit of "Fallen Angel" from OPEN UP AND SAY AHH!).
While they're not the first to cover it, Poison's take on Pete Townshend's "Squeeze Box" notches up the innuendo, making it their own. No stranger to the forefront (after leading his trio Samantha 7), notorious guitarist C.C. DeVille takes over lead vocals in the reprise of the anthemic singalong "Home." When you ...
| | Great Ray Charles CD (1957) (Import) Argentina
Home: Volume V music CDs
$12.65 Charles' first 2 jazz sessions complete in chronological order. THE GREAT RAY CHARLES was originally released on Atlantic (1259) in 1958. THE GENIUS AFTER HOURS was originally released on Atlantic Jazzlore (0464) in August 1961.
THE GREAT RAY CHARLES features eight tracks of jazz recorded by American jazz and soul legend Ray Charles that features the tracks "Ray," My Melancholy Baby," and "Undecided" as well as arrangements by Quincy Jones.
It's hard to go wrong with a Ray Charles album. However, fans of the man's beautifully expressive, bluesy voice may be in for a surprise with THE GREAT RAY CHARLES. An anomaly in the artist's huge discography, this disc is wholly instrumental, focusing on Charles' outstanding, jazz-influenced piano playing. The set is a mixture of standards ("The Man I Love," "Ain't Misbehavin'"), contemporary pieces (Horace Silver's ...
