| | Bob Marley Babylon By Bus CD (1978) Remastered
Reggae In Paradise CD music
$10.95 Recorded live in Paris, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; London, England & Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Originally released on Island (11).
Remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Capturing Bob Marley and the Wailers at their creative peak, BABYLON BY BUS is a righteously grooving collection of recordings from the group's 1978 European tour. An excellent companion to 1975's JAH LIVE, BABYLON BY BUS includes energetic versions of several tracks from the classic 1977 album EXODUS as well as a sprinkling of earlier material. The album is a textbook study in reggae's sultry rhythmic power, and the ...
| | Madness Ultimate Collection CD (2000)
Reggae In Paradise music CDs
$11.99 Recorded between 1979 and 1985. Includes liner notes by Sara Cody.
Inevitably, if one calls one's compilation Ultimate Collection, you're going to have some smug journalist replying, "Ultimate collection? I think not." Then again, Madness chalked up quite an impressive list of hits, and even at a generous 19 tracks, this album couldn't fit them all. So then it's down to choices. Chart placement obviously wasn't a factor, or "Driving in My Car," a British Top Five, would be here and "Yesterday's Men," a lowly number 18, wouldn't, while A- sides would not have been supplanted by their flips. Sometimes listeners get both, as with "Tomorrow's (Just Another Day)" and its B-side "Madness (Is All in the Mind)." But best of all, we're offered the original 45 take, not the album versions later most fans are now familiar with. Thus their debut single "The Prince" comes in its singular robes, not its album garb, as does its flip "Madness." August 1985's "Yesterday's Men" is the latest release of the lot, although the group knocked out three more singles before splitting. Inevitably, though, the tracks are not in chronological order, ...
| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Reggae In Paradise songs
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and ...
| | Augustus Pablo King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown CD (1976) Deluxe Edition
Reggae In Paradise album
$14.45 KING TUBBY MEETS ROCKERS UPTOWN compiles King Tubby's dubwise mixes of twelve classic Augustus Pablo-produced tracks.
According to the Virgin Encyclopedia of Reggae, this is "regarded by many as one of the greatest dub albums of all time." Such regard is doubtless thanks to the stature of the individual talents collaborating here. Augustus Pablo, born Horace Swaby, 1954, proprietor of Rockers International record store & sound-system, was better known as an artist in his own right (developing a signature "Far East Sound" both as producer and soloist on the melodica). King Tubby, ...

| | Lee 'Scratch' Perry Battle Of Armagedon CD (1986)
Reggae In Paradise music CDs
$10.15 "Open your eyes and see/Open your ears and listen," Perry advises on this excellent record, and you would be foolish to ignore this advice. Battle, in many ways, gets to the heart of Perry's technique as a mixer and producer. The bass throbs so much on this record that ...
| | Desmond Dekker King Of Kings CD (1995)
Reggae In Paradise songs
$11.19 One of those ideas which look great on paper, but disappoint in reality. The concept of pairing the Jamaican singing legend with the Specials is indeed brilliant, unfortunately it occurred around a dozen years too late. So this is not the adrenaline fueled two toners of yore, but a more sedate version circa 1993, accompanied by a quartet of session men. King of Kings is not a total abortion, however, the thought of what could have been weights heavily on the final result. The band run through a dozen Jamaican gems from the 1960s, hits from the likes of Eric Morris, Derrick Morgan, Justin Hines, Jimmy Cliff, Theo Beckford, Hopeton Lewis, and Dekker himself. It all swings along pleasantly enough, but few of the tracks exude enough energy to really grab one's attention. Not surprisingly, one of the stand-outs is Dekker's own "King of Ska," where everyone goes hell for leather; equally good is a smoking version of "Carry Go Bring Come." Elsewhere the bland arrangements and slick playing bleed the lifeblood right out of the songs. Dekker ...
