This CD reissue from England is almost (but not quite) identical to Raven Records' Richard Harris: The Webb Sessions 1968-69 from Australia, combining the contents of the albums A Tramp Shining and The Yard Went on Forever. The difference is the absence of the last Richard Harris-Jimmy Webb collaboration, "One of the Nicer Things," which appeared as a free-standing single in 1969. Alan Hodgson's annotation is slightly less informative than the notes by Jimmy Webb on the Raven CD. On the other hand, this disc is also about $3-$5 cheaper, so budget-minded fans may appreciate it. Jerry Garcia's first solo album in over four years and the final studio release featuring the classic lineup of the Jerry Garcia Band, 1982's RUN FOR THE ROSES was the initial indication that Garcia was struggling to find his way out of the drugs and depression that had left the Grateful Dead so inert for the preceding few years. The gently loping title track, a Robert Hunter lyric built on the interplay between Garcia's guitar and weary, bluesy vocals and Melvin Seals's soulful organ fills, is one of the highlights of Garcia's entire extracurricular musical career. Another standout track is the heartfelt, country-tinged cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," which would go on to become a favorite Garcia cover. Although the Dead would not fully break out of their creative rut until 1987's IN THE DARK, the defiantly old-school, mellow, and rootsy RUN FOR THE ROSES shows that even in a personal slump, Garcia was still capable of greatness.
Run for the Roses is the last of the studio albums to have come from the Jerry Garcia Band, even though the combo would continue to tour for another 13 years. Sadly, it is also Garcia's most lightweight effort as a bandleader. The disc certainly features a few distinct and redeemable moments; however, taken as whole there are far too many marginal performances for it to be deemed as thoroughly captivating as any of his previous solo work -- especially the wholly inspired Cats Under the Stars (1978). The bands ferociously tight and rabidly energetic live shows have secured AGGRESSIVE DISORDER as a new breed of the old school.In 2003 Vocalist/Guitarist Bruce Phillips and Drummer Chris Teot folded their project Instigation. As the material they were currently writing was taking a extreme turn. "The new material we were writing at the time was far from what we did with Instigation" stated Bruce in various interviews. With the disbanding of Instigation, the evolution to AGGRESSIVE DISORDER was complete. In August 2004 the band recorded a two track demo.
