When Joe Dowell's debut single -- a cover of "Wooden Heart" from Elvis Presley's film G.I. Blues -- became a number one hit in 1961, Smash followed up with an album that gives the impression that Dowell is merely a covers artist. The pleasant but unspectacular Wooden Heart has no original songs, only the hit title track and covers of then-recent hits such as Gene McDaniels' "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" and Bobby Rydell's "Swingin' School." Dowell's second and final Smash album, German American Hits, is likewise a collection of familiar songs, but his singles (excepting "Wooden Heart") are originals, some of which were written by Dowell. It was common in the '60s for artists to cut albums of their versions of recent hits, and Wooden Heart is simply that. ~ Greg Adams
This is absolutely quintessential early 1960s pop -- pop before the loss of innocence. Joe came to Nashville during a school break, and was signed by Mercury Records. He was whisked into the studio, and offered a chance to record a song that Elvis had ou Joe Dowell Wooden Heart Songs | 1. | Wooden Heart (English Version) | |

Wooden Heart album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included ...
| | Ruby & The Romantics Our Day Will Come: Very Best Of CDs (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Wooden Heart CD music
$18.25 Ruby & the Romantics have been poorly served by best-of collections, which are too brief and skimpy. This two-CD, 42-song set goes too far in the other direction, and not everything on here is exciting or worthy of multiple listens by any means. Still, too much is better than too little, and this does thoroughly cover the prime era of the original lineup at Kapp from 1963-1967. On the plus side, this convincingly demonstrates that there was more depth and quality than is commonly acknowledged to a group that is often remembered only for one song ("Our Day Will Come") or regarded as a lightweight pop-soul group. There are numerous good blends of girl group Brill Building pop and smooth soul (and, often, light to heavy touches of bossa nova) on disc one in particular. Star tracks include the soaring Van McCoy composition "When You're Young and in Love," the doo wop-indebted "Moonlight and Music" (penned by the Romantics' Leroy Fann), the obscure Bacharach/David ballad "I Cry Alone," the booming uptown soul production of "Does He Really Care for Me," the delicate bossa nova of ...

| | Jethro Tull Stand Up CD (1969) (Import) Japan; Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Wooden Heart music CDs
$44.69 Principally recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Ian Anderson.
People often forget that Tull started out as a forward-looking blues-rock unit not dissimilar to contemporaries like Cream and Led Zeppelin. While the blues influence is heard most clearly on the debut THIS WAS, its successor STAND UP still shows some of those traces. Tracks like "A New Day Yesterday" and "Nothing Is Easy" are the prime examples of this hard-hitting, bluesy riff-rock approach. Elsewhere, though, the boys begin to show some of the folk, jazz, and classical influences that would soon make them a leading exponent of progressive rock.
"Bouree" is a flute-led instrumental track that combines Ian Anderson's improvisations with melodic bass work that's ...

| | Bip-Hop Generation, Vol. 4 CD (2001)
Wooden Heart music CDs
$14.29 The fourth installment in Bip-Hop's chronicling of turn-of-the-century electronic music may not be as compelling as Vol. 3, but it still holds strong moments. Warp recording artist Mira Calix opens the set with "Picture 4 You" -- nice percussion loops, but too long for its repetitive contents. Si-cut.db and Twine offer much more meat, the former contributing two glitchy tracks, the latter moodier tunes (there is even a melancholic electric guitar part in "One_2"). Datach'i adds a touch ...

| | Down 4 The Count CD (2008)
Wooden Heart album
$13.29 Down 4 The Count is a five-voice, mostly a cappella vocal jazz ensemble comprised of two baritones and three sopranos. Their specialty is swing, and boy, do they swing! Taken individually, the genres of jazz and a cappella are challenging enough; the combination of jazz harmony and a cappella singing keeps these singers on their toes – and their audiences on the edge of their seats. Down 4 The Count performs mostly original arrangements that tend towards being very high and very fast. Few audiences forget the lush voicings of Turn Out The Stars, the self-deprecating humor of Four Sopranos, or the clever lyrics of Whirlybird (if they can understand them at a tempo of approximately 260!).Down 4 The Count’s beginnings can be traced back to the spring of 2003, when the vocal jazz director at California State University Northridge abruptly decided to quit teaching the class on the first day of the semester. Seven students, ardent lovers of the genre of ensemble jazz singing, decided to keep the ensemble going even if it wasn’t a class. Three of the current members of Down 4 The Count met and became friends in that unique ensemble: Colleen Keene, Francesca Delfin, and Genevieve Artadi. Down 4 The Count officially started rehearsing as a separate ensemble in September of 2003, immediately after they ...
