One of the greatest attributes of the reality-TV series AMERICAN IDOL is that it's positively awash in a camaraderie and inclusiveness. Yes, the show is clearly a hard-fought contest, and judge Simon Cowell's snarky dismissal of rejects is a notable feature, but what's endearing about IDOL is the way that the hopeful singers band together and support each other, even as the nation rallies behind their favorites. In 2003, while Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken's chummy rivalry was foremost in the national consciousness, Kimberley Locke quietly sang her heart out and almost knocked one of those front-runners from the lead, ultimately settling for third place.
However, third place was no dummy prize, as singing every week turned enough ears to garner Locke's own major-label release. ONE LOVE is a treasure trove of instantly engaging pop and rousing melodies that should continue AMERICAN IDOL's success as a launching ground for future stars. Locke possesses a flexible voice and an indomitable spirit that breathes life into peppy, hooky numbers such as "8th World Wonder," and it doesn't hurt when Aiken drops by for the ballad "Without You." On this impressive debut of R&B-tinged pop, Locke overcomes her reality-TV-casualty status to show that she's a performer to watch.

One Love Music Review Average Rating: (3.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews She's a Star Kimberley Locke was my choice to win the second American Idol season. She came in third, but she's doing great. This is a motivated and determined young woman. She's also got a good voice. She is beyond the standard black woman sings R&B style of CD. She sounds rocky sometimes, pop sometimes, and even R&B sometimes. I liked every cut. Even Somewhere Over the Rainbow is good if you don't go in expecting Patti LaBelle. I suspect her subsequent CDs will be even better. We'll probably be wondering who Rueben Stoddard and Clay Aiken are in the future, but K-Lo will be here a long time! Mixed Bag, Excellent Collection of Songs Ignore the reviews on this page that criticize this album. They are wrong! This CD is wonderful. It is a mixed bad, yes, but most of the songs are incredibly well performed. Outstanding are the ballads, "Before," and "Without You," a duet with Clay Aiken. The uptempo "Have You Ever Been In Love" is also quite good. The only disappointments for me are the bonus tracks, "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."
Evenso, what you get here is a solid collection of songs in various styles, sung by a very talented vocalist. Kimberly Locke deserves to be heard. This album is a great start! Submitted by Ron C (Richmond, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
She should've LOCKED better songs I bought this CD the day it was released really anticipating some real "DIVA" jams, but was really disappointed by what I heard. I expected so much more, more soul, more emotion. I like Kim, understand, but I'm not 2 big on this CD. I like "Without You," "You've Changed," and #10(I forgot the name of it). I hope her next CD is more on the "hip" side. Submitted by Derrick (St. Louis, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I desperately wanted to love this cd. BUT...... From the moment I heard her mezmerizing, pristine voice on the first episode of American Idol 2, I knew that she would at least finish in the top 3. As you know, she accomplished that. When I heard that she had signed a record deal, I was THRILLED!!! I anxiously awaited the release of her first cd. The first cut (8th World Wonder) off the cd reels you in, hook, line and sinker, and you INSTANTLY want MORE! The trouble is, with this cd, you just don't get "MORE". It actually left me scratching my head, wondering what on earth went wrong? Now, I am aware that this is her debut album, and that she is pretty much at the mercy of the production team, and record company...leaving her ZERO artistic freedom. And it shows.....BIG TIME! At least with AI, should could choose her songs that she wanted to perform and put her own twist on them, making them her very own! (Band of Gold, Inseperable, Emotion, comes to mind) Perhaps after this dreadful release, she will be able to stretch her wings, and grow as an artist. I purposely waited to post my review, hoping that some of the offerings on this cd would grow on me after repeated listenings. Unfortunately, only one or two did, but they didn't make enough of an impression on me....I don't even remember the song titles. I actually couldn't even tell you where this cd is in my house right now at this point. The song choices on this cd were a BIG disappointment. Her voice is buried, and most songs are in a quagmire of over-production.
Note to Kimberley....I still LOVE you, and THAT VOICE, but....keep plugging along and get with the right group of people who can make you a star. You got the pipes, but that alone ain't good enough. Your production team and record label can make or break you.
