| | Pete Malinverni Tempest CD Pete Malinverni Discography of CDs
The jazz world is full of pianists and composers with formidable chops, but it's rare to find musicians as accomplished as Pete Malinverni who write with his level of insightful straightforwardness or play with his kind of elegant approachability. While both his playing and his writing are consistently impressive on both an intellectual and aesthetic basis, he never sounds like he's showing off, and never makes the listener fight through a jungle of tangled chord changes or unnecessarily complicated melodic lines in order to get access to the musical ideas. One of Malinverni's original compositions provides the high point on this album: "Twelve" is built on a midtempo theme of deceptive simplicity and sheer melodic beauty, and his elaborations of that theme build up over the course of his solos like a multi-layered pastry. The standards are more of a mixed bag -- he delivers nicely swinging renditions of "It Could Happen to You" and "My Heart Stood Still," but "Get Happy" is too fast and loose, bordering on sloppy. In general, though, Malinverni's taste and musicianship are of the highest quality on this album, and bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Leroy Williams support him with similar grace and finesse. Strongly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Pianist Pete Malinverni teams up again for the fifth time with the formidable and estimable accompanists Dennis Irwin on bass and Leroy Williams on drums. Together they create a program of inspired performances of standards and original compositions. Pet

| | Rob Schneiderman Back In Town CD (2004)
Tempest CD music
$13.85 An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova rhythms, "Chega de Saudade" starts out much slower than usual, and the second half of Sonny Rollins' "Paul's Pal" ...

| | Eric Alexander Battle: Live At Smoke CD (2005)
Tempest songs
$14.29 Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt) is a long workout starting with Alexander's intense solo, though Herring provides a bit ...
| | Mulgrew Miller Live At The Kennedy Center CD (2006)
Tempest album
$14.59 A fine hard bop pianist who is especially effective on trio dates, Mulgrew Miller stretches out with his trio on this first of two CDs recorded at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He kicks thing off with a driving take of the old chestnut "If I Should Lose You," building the intensity gradually to a feverish pitch, while he never runs short of ideas in a lush treatment of the standard "Skylark." His sauntering original "When I Get There" shows the influence of ...
| | Billy Drummond Native Colours CD (1994) (Import) United Kingdom
Tempest CD music
$16.95 On drummer Billy Drummond's debut as a leader he is joined by his wife, pianist Renee Rosnes, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, and unrelated bassist Ray Drummond to perform three Rosnes originals, five jazz classics, and one standard. Billy Drummond, a former member of the jazz collective OTB, with Rosnes and Wilson, and who has since worked with jazz greats Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson, displays the versatility and energy that has made him a first-call musician since he moved to New York, contributing two well-played solos on Thelonius Monk's "San Francisco Holiday/Worry Later" and Ornette Coleman's "Happy House," played as a sax-bass-drums trio. In addition to her original compositions, Rosnes contributes a memorable solo on Hutcherson's "8/4 Beat," and her Hancock-influenced ...
| | Nasar Abadey Mirage CD (2000)
Tempest music CDs
$14.69 Talented Washington-based drummer Nasar Abadey has built a solid reputation as a sideman with several groups, particularly those led by trumpeter Malachi Thompson. Mirage documents a collection of recordings from the 1990s from the drummer's band, Supernova, which in the early part of the decade featured the late tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson. Not surprisingly, Jefferson provides some of the best playing on the album, with his contribution to ...
