| | Keith Urban CD (1999)
All American Country CD music
$10.15 "Rollercoaster" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
Keith Urban is Australian, but listening to his debut self-titled solo CD, you'd swear he was raised somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. Just as the Beatles mimicked the American accents of their musical heroes, Urban, the former leader of the group the Ranch, adopts the twang of the country stars he heard growing up Down Under. Urban's brand of country includes soulful vocals; a nice mix of acoustic and steel guitars, banjo, fiddles, and mandolins; and some fine songwriting, from Urban, Steve Wariner, and even two former members of the Go-Gos's (!) The subject here, with few exceptions, is love in all its aspects, from the hooky opening cut, "It's a Love Thing," to the gorgeous ballad "Your Everything," to the Cajun stomp of "I Wanna Be Your Man (Forever)." Urban's excellent guitar playing throughout the CD is tasteful and understated, but adds immeasurably to the arrangements. When he really cuts loose, on the instrumental "Rollercoaster," you can hear why acts like the Dixie Chicks and Garth Brooks tapped him to play on their CDs. Overall, KEITH URBAN offers a taste of what this talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist might do in the future.

| | Mark Chesnutt Greatest Hits CD (1996)
All American Country music CDs
$11.55 East Texas native Mark Chesnutt claims his place among the greatest modern country performers with this sampling of songs from his six previous albums. Shunning the glitzy side of the business in favor of the gritty, working-class roots of honky-tonk, this contemporary hillbilly storyteller has instilled his own brand of artistic integrity into popular country music. The songs on GREATEST HITS tell stories about real people, from the sweetly sincere ballad "Let It Rain" to the tongue-in-cheek angst of "Goin' Through The Big D": "I'm goin' through the big D and don't mean Dallas/ I can't believe what the judge had to tell us/I got the Jeep and she got the palace."
Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann.
Personnel: Mark Chesnutt (vocals); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Larry Byrom, Brent ...

| | Very Best Of Tracy Lawrence CD (2007)
All American Country album
$11.05 Starting with 1991's STICKS AND STONES, Texan Tracy Lawrence has taken up the mantle of honky tonk for a new generation of country artists. As Nashville has moved further towards pop and rock influences, Lawrence's fierce traditionalism has caused him to be squeezed out of the picture a bit; Lawrence has been without a major label contract since 2004. Rhino's excellent THE VERY BEST OF TRACY LAWRENCE is a 21-track précis of that 13-year period, picking tracks from all of his Atlantic and Warner Brothers albums to paint a picture of Lawrence as the modern heir to the likes of Ray Price and Lefty Frizell: a honky-tonker who knows his way around a tear-stained ballad as well. The well-chosen selection contains all of Lawrence's biggest singles, including all seven of his number-one hits.

| | Barbara Lamb Fiddle Fatale CD (1993)
All American Country songs
$10.95 Principally recorded at Champagne Studios, Nashville, Tennessee and Ironwood Studio, Seattle, Washington.
This was fiddler Barbara Lamb's declaration of independence upon her departure from Ranch Romance, an (almost) all-woman retro country swing outfit that had recorded several very fine albums for the Sugar Hill label. Her former bandmates join her here on several tracks that could have easily been included on a Ranch Romance album, including a debonair rendition of the Texas swing classic "Panhandle Rag" and a charming Tex-Mex number titled "So What." Elsewhere on the program she returns to her bluegrass roots, accompanied by banjoist Tony Trischka, guitarist Scott Nygaard, and mandolinist Sam Bush, among others. The program opens with a burning performance of "Sally Goodin," and it also includes a great fiddle and banjo arrangement of "Katy Hill" and a cute fiddle-and-bongo arrangement of "Ducks on the Millpond." She ...
| | Freddie Hubbard Keystone Bop: Sunday Night CD (1981)
All American Country album
$9.79 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This Prestige release from 1981 is an unedited recording of the last night of a live Friday-through-Sunday series at San Francisco's Keystone Korner. The famous club is no longer, but the sound of Hubbard and his splendid company that great weekend survives. SUNDAY was put out as the first volume, because the recording on the final night was truer to the sound in the club. However, do not take that as a reason to dismiss FRIDAY and SATURDAY.
The lineup features Hubbard on trumpet, the great Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), and a seething young rhythm section that would quickly move to the forefront of jazz in the '80s and '90s. The blowing on that night was furious, and it's captured perfectly here. Hubbard's own tunes-"Birdlike" (for Charlie Parker), "The Intrepid Fox," and the funky "Skydive"-all catch fire. The solos exchanged between Henderson and Hubbard on "The Intrepid Fox"-long, passionate explorations packed with leaping phrases and dynamic tension-show these two giants at their ...

| | Willie Nelson City Of New Orleans CD (1984)
All American Country music CDs
$5.95 By the mid-1980s, Willie was consistently topping the country charts. He had also softened his sound, opting to record with smooth Nashville studio musicians rather than his funkier live band (although distinctive harmonica player Mickey Raphael continued to appear on Willie's albums). CITY OF NEW ORLEANS typifies this period of Willie's career. The album consists entirely of ballads, only one of which--"Why Are You Pickin' On Me"--was written by Willie. Other tracks include the Steve Goodman-penned title track, previously a hit for Arlo Guthrie; the rhythm-and-blues standard "Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms);" David Loggins' "Please ...
