COMPLETE MEMORIAL ALBUM SESSIONS collects some of Eric Dolphy's last recordings, from 1963. Personnel: Eric Dolphy (flute, bass clarinet, alto saxophone); Prince Lasha (flute); Clifford Jordan (soprano saxophone); Sonny Simmons (alto saxophone); Woody Shaw (trumpet); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); J.C. Moses (drums). Recording information: New York, NY (06/1963-07/1963). The Complete Memorial Album Sessions collects all nine tracks originally recorded for the Douglas label in 1963 and issued in various forms over the years (often in piecemeal fashion) following Eric Dolphy's death a year after the sessions were completed. Incredibly, this wasDolphy's first opportunity to record as a leader since finishing his last album (issued by Prestige) nearly two years earlier. Fortunately, Dolphy was evidently given free reign by the producer, so the personnel he chose and the arrangements are rather adventurous. A nonet including Woody Shaw, Clifford Jordan (on soprano sax), alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons, flautist Prince Lasha, and Bobby Hutcherson is heard in the tantalizing "Burning Spear." A scaled-down group showcases the leader on flute in a spirited take of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz." But perhaps the most striking performances are Dolphy's three duets with bassist Richard Davis, especially on bass clarinet in Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" and flute in Jaki Byard's "Ode to Charlie Parker." To top it off, Dolphy completes the date with a powerful unaccompanied alto sax solo interpretation of "Love Me." ~ Ken Dryden

$5.95 Full Title: There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Every major recording artist seems to have some juvenilia in the catalog that has gotten away somehow and gets repackaged endlessly, ripping off fans and making life hard for discographers. In Jimmy Buffett's case, that juvenilia consists of the recordings he made for Barnaby Records in the early '70s. Originally issued ...

| | Skye Mind How You Go CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Complete Memorial Album Sessions
$14.25 The debut album from former Morcheeba vocalist Skye Edwards has a floating, ethereal quality that suggests all the space and light of her given name. Her voice soars over sweet, electro-pop backing tracks that maintain an unhurried pace throughout. Produced and co-written by Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Roger Waters) and Gary Clark, with some additional production by Daniel Lanois, the album augers well for Skye's solo career. The voice and focal point for Morcheeba would seem to be a natural solo artist once the band dissolved after its 2003 greatest-hits release Parts of the Process. But since Skye Edwards had written little of Morcheeba's material, the resulting album under her own name, now shortened to just Skye, took three years. Although little has changed in her approach on this debut, there are subtle differences between this music and the work with her previous band. According to the liner notes (oddly there are no song or musician credits), producer Patrick Leonard helped write much of this material and it seems that his keyboards and drum loops are the only instruments. That provides a deceptively chilly base over which Skye lays her sumptuous, velvety vocals. It's an interesting effect when it works, but it gives a somewhat hesitant feel to the finished product, as if these are demos meant to be expanded with a full band later. Likewise, the ...
