After the break-up of the Judds, Wynonna skyrocketed as a solo artist. She was finally recognized as "Female Vocalist Of The Year" by the Academy Of Country Music, receiving that well-deserved honor in 1994.
TELL ME WHY, Wynonna's sophomore solo album, takes more risks and enters more progressive territory than her previous WYNONNA, or the perfect harmony-driven Judds releases. Wynonna is a blues rocker caught in the body of a country singer, with roots closer to Memphis than Nashville, and aspirations to be Bonnie Raitt as strong as those to be Patsy Cline. Wynonna successfully combines her influences and talents, establishing herself as one of the better voices on the pop scene.
From the slick, infectuous title track, with its warm vocal gymnastics, to the swinging, upbeat "Father Sun" and driving, gospel-based, growling R&B cuts like "Let's Make A Baby King" and "Rock Bottom," diversity rules TELL ME WHY. Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Girls With Guitars" is a fun feminist rocker. "Is It Over Yet" and "Only Love" are powerful ballads--the latter standing as a focused musical and lyrical statement, perfectly produced and performed.
But it is the gutsy, saucy "That Was Yesterday," written by mama Naomi, that is Wynonna's tour-de-force. The well-crafted blues song is sung with style and subtle shadings, reinforcing Wynonna's standing as a mature and potent vocalist. There's punch and kick in Wynonna's blend of country, rock and blues, displaying an earthiness and grittiness rare among women in country music.
"Is It Over" was nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.

Rolling Stone (7/8/93, p.114) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...matches her debut while hinting that Judd's got more talent under her hat than previously expected...a half-country, half-soft-rock album comfortably packed with more emotions than most mood rings can handle..." Entertainment Weekly (8/93, p.52) - "...Wynonna has made a pop record, full of intelligent rock, blues and gospel-flavored songs that highlight her three great obsessions: Jesus, Elvis, and Mama..." - Rating: A Wynonna Judd Tell Me Why Songs Tell Me Why Review

| | Wynonna What The World Needs Now CD (2003)
Tell Me Why music CDs
$6.09 By the time of this album's release, the world had already become accustomed to (ostensibly) country singers mixing their Nashville twang with rock, pop, and more. When Wynonna Judd started her solo career, though, she was something of an anomaly in the mainstream country world for doing just that. So while WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE might not sound particularly groundbreaking among its contemporaries, it's just following through on a thread Wynonna started quite a while before. When she breaks into a near-rap on the break of "It All Comes Down to Love," or comes off like a quirky, female John Parr on "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis," it's an eclecticism well-earned. And when she takes the Elvis thing a step further by updating the King's classic "Burnin' Love," or gives Foreigner a soulful treatment with the ...

Tell Me Why songs

"Change The World," written by Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Tommy Sims, won the 1997 Grammy Award for Song Of The Year.
Wynonna had no problem with the spotlight; or, as the tabloids regularly revealed, with opening up her private life for all to poke through and ponder. For all of her cultivating of celebrity, her albums continued to turn down the lights and focus on the softer glow of emotional verities her albums. Revelations is another worthy solo effort by the younger member of the Judds, the mother-daughter duo through which she first found massive fame. Often somber, and just as often right on the money, she casts a blue tint to several reflective songs that examine spirituality (without sermons) and the quiet discoveries that come with mature relationships. ...

Tell Me Why album
$9.29 To say the least, The Dust Bowl Symphony is an ambitious effort on Nanci Griffith's behalf, an attempt to recast several of her songs in the context of a suite, complete with backing from the London Symphony Orchestra. Intriguing idea, but one that doesn't really quite work. Griffith ...
| | Africando Trovador CD (1994)
Tell Me Why CD music
$17.19 This is Africando's compelling debut album that united three top Senegalese singers with the cream of New York salsa musicians. Originally conceived by the Senegalese producer, Ibrahima Sylla and arranged by the expert Malian flautist, Boncana Maiga, who had studied music in Cuba for eight years, Africando accentuates the Cuban-Puerto Rican-Dominican bass note in the myriad forms of modern African music and also breathes new life into contemporary salsa by avoiding the limp commercial brand prevalent at the time. They strike deep into the heart of classic Cuban-Latin music revealing the jewel in all its brilliance with extraordinary style and steam. Boncana Maiga's arrangements gleam with a truly magical power that are for dancers the world over. In addition, the veteran crew represents centuries of musical experience of the first order. Pape Seck, whose raspy gritty voice is heard on "Lakh Bi" and "Mathiaky," sang for the legendary Senegalese groups Star Band, Star Band Number One and Orchestre Baobab. Medoune Diallo, another of the Senegalese lead singers, also sang with the apotheosized Orchestre Baobab. Ronnie ...
