Julie Roberts's bio reads like a classic success story; while working as a secretary for a Mercury Records bigwig, the singer honed her craft at night, never letting her boss become aware of her show biz aspirations. That same boss ended up signing her to a lucrative record deal, and after listening to Roberts's self-titled debut, it's easy to see why. Possessing a voice that naturally exudes melancholy soul, the South Carolina native wisely chooses material to match, foregoing lighter Nashville fare in favor of more serious songs. Often sounding like a young Tanya Tucker, Roberts, along with her producer Brent Rowan, matches earthy topics with appropriately unadorned vocal performances and spare arrangements. Consequently, highlights such as "Wake Up Older" (a frank morning-after lament) and "The Chance" (an uplifting pledge to live the full life the narrator's mother was denied) resonate long after Julie Roberts's debut disc stops spinning.
Personnel includes: Julie Roberts (vocals).

| | Allison Moorer Duel CD (2004)
Julie Roberts CD music
$14.69 Once upon a time, Allison Moorer was a country artist who sang for a major record label. It might be easy then, to see her switch to Sugar Hill as a back-to-the-basics move, a reconnection with her country roots. Moorer, however, isn't that predictable, and The Duel -- while many things -- isn't country. In fact, the opening cut -- "I Ain't Giving Up on You" -- sounds a lot like classic rock and most of the album follows this course. This is interesting, in that Moorer's a strong writer, and it would've been easy to fall back on a tasteful country-folk production and become a fairly typical singer/songwriter. Instead, Moorer's plucky vocals, along with Adam Landry's electric guitar work and R.S. Field's steady backbeat, turn a song like "Melancholy Polly" into an easy-rolling ...

| | Gretchen Wilson Here For The Party CD (2004)
Julie Roberts songs
$9.55 In the tradition of singers such as Wanda Jackson and Tanya Tucker comes Gretchen Wilson, a self-proclaimed hard-living trailer-park inhabitant with country-rock attitude to spare. The pleasant surprise with Wilson is that, in stark contrast to the streamlined country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty (musically or otherwise). Though her grassroots ethos clearly plays into her success, it's not a pose: Wilson means ...

| | Sundowners Chicago Country Legends CD (2003)
Julie Roberts music CDs
$9.49 In the old days before country music was regarded as a viable commercial medium by the mainstream music industry (a discovery that has caused country & western nothing but trouble since), practically every city of any size had at least one honky tonk with a house band capable of playing anything a customer was likely to request. In Chicago, the Sundowners were a three-piece country band that held court from 1959 to 1989 in a handful of Windy City beer joints; they spent most of their career at a ...

| | Matt Williams Young Man About Town CD (2007)
Julie Roberts music CDs
$13.15 There have been many changes in the past year for Matt Williams: a change of scenery, a change in his way of life, oil changes, guitar strings, a couple of changes of clothes, a change in stage delivery and a slight change in the songwriting process, which for an artist is always precious and should always be constant. For the past year Matt has been a traveling songwriter, booking his own shows, driving his car, handling his promotion, setting up his stages, tearing down his stages, making phone calls, sending emails and slowly and surely, watching his progress. Not much time for sleeping. "I've seen a lot this past year and a lot of it has ended up in my songs and some of it stored for later. It may never come out but its mine. I earned it, with a little help from my friends, of course." Since June of 2005 Matt has been doing the music thing, the road thing, as a full-time job. "Before, when I lived in Austin I always had jobs and was still able to focus on music you know, have a band and play a couple shows a week. The touring was just going to be for the summer but at the end of the summer I realized I could actually do this." This has seen Matt play in play in 16 states, play some of most prestigious rooms in America, expand his audience, make new friends, make enough money to eat and fill his gas tank and sell over 2,000 copies of his debut record, Lets Work it Out. Matt moved to Austin, TX in 2001, performing anywhere he could. "Once I started my record I was able to get better gigs and play some actual music venues. Once it was finished, I played some of the best rooms in town." These included the Saxon Pub, Flamingo Cantina, Cheatam St Warehouse, the famous Antones, KVET shows at Hills Café, Oklahoma Citys Blue Door and a six-month residency at the New Braunfels Museum of Art and Music. Matt appeared on KLBJs Dudley and Bob show, KO-OP Radios ATX Live and Around the Town Sounds, Open Air Live on College Stations KEOS, and Austins Fox 7 News Morning Show. Matts debut was also played on Austins KGSR, KLBJ and KOOP stations. Around Texas, his single, "Money Ive Spent", was added to 12 different radio station rotations. Nationally, he's getting played in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, North ...
