Platinum Collection album
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure honky-tonk of "Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey On You" and the tears-in-your-beer emotion of "When I Fall" with equal panache. It's guitarist Keith Burns, however, who delivers the record's most accessible song with "Sad City," which features a guest vocal from Hootie & The Blowfish's Darius Rucker. A mix of sawdust, sweat, and jumbotron-ready party spirit, this R.I.D.E. is guaranteed ...

| | Ty Herndon Right About Now CD (2007)
Platinum Collection album
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which is distributed by Fontana), Herndon lays out 11 new songs with help from songwriters like producer Darrell Brown, Keith Urban, Jess Cates, Beth Nielsen Chapman and others. The opener, written by Brown, Radney Foster, and Urban is a downtempo modern country rocker turned personal anthem. Herndon's voice is not only unchanged from his missing years, it's stronger, his phrasing is tighter and more expressive, and his manner of handling a song is entirely his own. "You Still Own Me" opens with a fiddle and a banjo and a shuffling snare. It's modern country at its best. This is one of those tracks that if the radio programmers have guts and his label can come up with the cash for a video (Trey Fanjoy should direct it, if there's any justice) it's all but a guaranteed hit. This is the kind of song that Sara Evans can pull off without a lot of trouble, but few male singers can make it seem so easy. Herndon has soul and plenty ...
| | Lorrie Morgan Color Of Roses CDs (2002)
Platinum Collection CD music
$13.35 Lorrie Morgan says that she has always wanted to do a live album, but it wasn't until 2001 until the opportunity "arose," no pun intended. The Color of Roses, released in March 2002, encapsulates Morgan's remarkable career while celebrating her ability to move live audiences with her music. Most of the singer's hits are bundled in the package, including an emotional performance of "Something in Red," the uplifting "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," and the sassy "Watch Me." One hit that would have perfectly rounded the collection, "Heart Over Mind," is conspicuously absent, however. Still, the album offers enough nostalgia to satisfy longtime ...
| | Eck Robertson Old Time Texas Fiddler 1922-1929 CD (1999)
Platinum Collection music CDs
$13.19 For most listeners, until the release of this CD, the easiest way to partake of Eck Robertson's fiddle playing was to catch his appearance in the documentary Festival, about the Newport Folk Festival, where he played in the middle 1960s. The 16 sides here include Robertson's history-making June 30, 1922 recording of "Arkansas Traveller," which made him the first country musician ever to cut a record, and the material follows on as late as October 1929. Those slightly scratchy 1922 acoustic recordings with Henry Gilliland are still the definitive performances of those works, 80 years after they were laid down, and they're augmented by the presence of four more cuts from those sessions, with the rest of the disc filled out by the products of his 1929 Dallas recording sessions, the next time he went before a microphone. Whether playing as a solo performer or backed by piano, guitar, or small string band, Robertson's playing reflects the extraordinary combination of dexterity and energy that kept audiences spellbound from the 1920s to the 1960s. Robertson, already in his 30s and a veteran performer when the first of these recordings was made, often sounds like two or more musicians at the same time, and the fidelity of even the acoustic-era recordings is more than sufficient to capture the elegantly nuanced, highly complex figures played by the legendary fiddle virtuoso. Among the "firsts" here is a medley of "Sally Johnson"/"Billy in the Low Ground," the earliest record of a piece (especially "Billy in the Low Ground") that was to become a bluegrass standard ...

| | Bluegrass Reunion CD (1991)
Platinum Collection album
$14.55 This is the fourth release on David "Dawg" Grisman's (mandolin/vocals) highly respected Acoustic Disc record label. While Dawg's multifarious talents in front of the microphone are undeniably brilliant, it is his lesser-lauded behind the scenes work as a conduit for equally skilled sonic craftsmen that is most prominently displayed here. This release gathers a quintet of musicians who at one time or another have crossed paths with Dawg. These range from bluegrass legend Red Allen (guitar/vocal), for whom Grisman cut his teeth as a producer as well as mandolin player in the early '60s, to Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), with whom he shared the stage on several occasions -- including the all-star bluegrass revivalist combo Old & in the Way. The pinpoint accuracy and opulent soundscape are practically tangible, again thanks to Dawg's self-taught and seemingly innate acoustic recording techniques.Bluegrass Reunion features 20 standards and traditional adaptations by a revolving cast that also includes Herb Pedersen (banjo/vocals), Jim Buchanan (fiddles/vocals), and Jim Kerwin (bass). While there is no surprise that the track list is heavy on the Acuff-Rose catalog, ...
