Up Pops The Sac
$13.45 Before finding a home further north on San Francisco's Om label, People Under the Stairs released this debut set of understated productions and steady rhymes via their own PUTS imprint. The subject matter on display is hardly unusual, taking in the requisite MC boasting ("Ten Tough Guys"), three tales of hip-hop love gone sour ("The Turndown"), inebriation out on the town ("Mid-City Fiesta"), and odes to the group's birthplace ("Los Angeles Daze") and their adopted home ("San Francisco Knights"). Unfortunately, the duo fails to follow up on the promise of "Death of a Salesman," a gem of ...
| | People Under The Stairs O.S.T. CD (2002)
Up Pops The Sac
$13.45 It's hard not to appreciate what People Under the Stairs are trying to accomplish with their third full-length. Fortunately, the attempt (i.e., the finished product) works just as well in practice as in theory. Although there could be a little more variety from track to track, this is one fun and funky record. There's a democratic, stylistic purity to O.S.T. -- hence the title -- that is wholly consistent with its predecessors. As Thes One explains in the liner notes, it's "an album that is made up of old records and personal experiences" -- no more, no less. Both One and Double K serve as MCs and DJs and think of themselves more as B-boys than artists or musicians. They eschew live instrumentation (with the exception of the bass on "The Breakdown") and rely instead on their distinctive, ...
| | MF Doom Metal Fingers Presents: Special Herbs Vol. 1 & 2 CDs (2002)
Up Pops The Sac
$10.95 Containing instrumental versions of previously released vocal tracks (everything from MF Doom's Operation: Doomsday to his work with K.M.D. and Monster Island Czars is represented here), a handful of previously vinyl-only cuts and some borrowed guest tracks from the likes of DJ Spinna, DJ Cucumber ...
| | Little Brother Listening CD (2003)
Up Pops The Sac
$15.05 In Little Brother's music, the North Carolina group makes a specific point to highlight the more refined aspects of mid-'90s hip-hop. Basing its 2002 sound upon the foundation previously established by the likes of Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Dee, and Black Star, Little Brother makes somewhat of a political statement by applying such standards to this modern age. The Listening does an exceptional job of proving that soulful meditations have indeed retained their traditional relevancy within the contemporary realms of rap. 9th Wonder's production leads the charge with distinct drum kicks pacing ...
| | Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition CD (2004)
Up Pops The Sac
$11.19 Virtually alone among contemporary rappers, Murs tells a straightforward story with every rap, and listeners looking for more to love following one of the most acclaimed rap records of 2003 (The End of the Beginning) will be glad to find ten more tracks of equal value on Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition. At some point during a hectic 2003 that saw him doing close to 200 shows, Murs decamped to North Carolina to join producer 9th Wonder (Little Brother) for that rare thing in post-gangsta rap -- a dedicated rapper/producer session. While he claims he's "more Coldplay than Ice-T," this is ...
| | J Dilla Donuts CD (2006)
Up Pops The Sac
$12.75 Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio, on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker's 32nd birthday, three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could've hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there ...

| | 7l & Esoteric Moments Of Rarity: '94-'04 CD (2005)
Up Pops The Sac
$12.85 Boston duo 7L & Esoteric have been big names in the East Coast hip-hop scene ever since their Speaking Real Words EP came out in 1999, and as they've grown as individuals, their sound as a group has also changed. For the most part, the songs on Moment of Rarities reflect the earlier part of their career, when they were both still developing their respective styles ("their" should be used with caution: some of the album doesn't have 7L producing), like "Boxcutter Rap" and "Culture of Death," though there are some later cuts included on it as well. "Olde English," which references Janet Jackson's Super Bowl incident and Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, couldn't have been made earlier than 2004, and ...
