Ronan Hardiman's music to Michael Flatley's extravagant stage production picks up directly where the show's precursor, the equally extravagant "Riverdance," left off. The sources for Hardiman's score are ancient Irish folk melodies, fervorous, polyrhythmic percussion and modern new-age keyboard textures; they swirl continuously through the music, creating a perfect backdrop for the flexible stomps of the show's dancers. Violins, accordions and bouzoukis fly above massive drum sounds (both acoustic and programmed), emphasizing an interaction of musical heritages. The fact that music with such disparate sources can find overwhelming international success is testament to this show's power and its cultural importance.
Original score written by Ronan Hardiman.

| | Celtic Thunder Act Two CD (2008)
Album music CDs
$13.39 Ireland's pop-vocal quintet Celtic Thunder became a sensation in the U.S. through a much-viewed PBS concert special. Their second album, ACT TWO, broadens their appeal even further. Singing in various combinations of solos and ensembles, the five vocalists tackle both Celtic ("Raggle Taggle Gypsy," "Danny Boy") and non-Celtic ("Knights in White Satin," "I Wanna Know What Love Is") material in an impassioned style that melds their Irish roots with eclectic pop sensibilities, positioning them as something like the Emerald Isle's answer to the Three Tenors.
Celtic Thunder (Ireland): Ivan Gilliland (guitar, mandolin); Brendan Monaghan (whistle, pipe, bodhran); Dave Cooke (keyboards); Nicky Scott (double bass, bass guitar); Liam Bradley (drums); Andrew Lavery (percussion).
Personnel: Alan Barr, Andrew Carlisle, Philip Bell, Gavin Noade, Glenn Cupples, Charles Noin (pipes, drums); Neil Byrne, Nigel Wheatley (background vocals); Dave Gold, Michael Keeney, Phil Coulter.
Arrangers: Dave Gold; Michael Keeney; Phil Coulter.
| | Very Best Of Enya CD (2009)
Album songs
$14.24 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger
Lyricist: Roma Ryan.
Personnel: Enya (vocals).
Liner Note Author: Niall Stokes.
Photographers: Russell Young; David Scheinmann; Max Adelman; Simon Fowler.
Arrangers: Enya; Nicky Ryan.
| | Celtic Woman CD (2005)
Album album
$11.09 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. On numerous tracks, several of the Irish sirens sing together; a particular standout is a soothingly sweet version of Enya's breakthrough hit "Orinoco Flow."

Various Artists/Celtic Woman: Orla ? (vocals, harp); Lisa, Méav, Chloé (vocals); Mairead (fiddle).
Additional personnel: Des Moore (guitar); Martin Johnston (cello); David Downes (whistle, harpsichord, keyboards); John O'Brien (Uilleann pipe); Eoghan O'Neill (bass guitar); Robbie Casserly (percussion).
| | Enya And Winter Came... CD (2008)
Album CD music
$11.85 Unlike Enya's 2006 EP, CHRISTMAS SECRETS, with which it shares no tracks, AND WINTER CAME is not a traditional Christmas album. It's more impressionistic than most, placing a handful of Christmas songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" in the midst of a shimmering soundscape of keyboards, strings, and Enya's trademark overdubbed vocal chorales. The mostly original material does an exceptional job of evoking a comforting midwinter landscape without resorting to sleigh bells or other Christmas music clichés. Highlights include "White Is in the Winter Night," "Last Time By Moonlight," and the evocative, childlike "Trains and Winter Rains." AND WINTER CAME is an unusual but lovely addition to the Christmas music pantheon.
Recording information: Aigle Studio.
Photographer: Simon Fowler.
Arrangers: Enya; Nicky Ryan.
Personnel: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Pat Farrell & the Believers (guitar, 12-string guitar).
Audio Mixer: Nicky Ryan.
| | Come Dance With Me In Ireland: Classic Irish Dance Music CD (2000)
Album music CDs
$9.29 The Claddagh label was founded in Dublin in 1959, and its catalog includes recordings by such eminent artists as piper Seamus Ennis, singer Dolores Keane, harper Derek Bell, fiddler Tommy Potts, and even Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney. A licensing agreement with the Atlantic label in 1999 has led to the reissue of a number of recordings from the Claddagh back catalog, including the first four Chieftains albums and solo work by Derek Bell. Come Dance With Me in Ireland is a sampler of sorts, with 12 tracks culled from Claddagh releases dating back as far as 1969. At under 40 minutes in length, it's a bit skimpy as collections of previously-released material go, but there's no arguing with the quality. Among other gems, there's a great set of hornpipes played with an almost polka verve by Phil, John, and Pip Murphy, an exquisite rendition of "The Ace and Deuce of Pipering" by uilleann piper Gay McKeon, and a very fine jig set played on flute and pipes by Ronan Brown and Peter O'Loughlin. This is traditional Irish music of the relatively hardcore variety -- no synthesizers, no multi-tracked vocals, no electric basses. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Digitally remastered by John Moloney.
Includes liner notes by John & Elizabeth Montague.
Compilation producers: Garech A Brun, John Moloney.

| | Marvin Gaye Here, My Dear CDs (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Album music CDs
$26.15 Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep Studios).
A concept album of some magnitude, although the subject matter could hardly have been comfortable listening for Anna, Marvin Gaye's ex-wife. She was the subject of Gaye's public 'divorce album', a clever idea if there were no real people involved. The illustration on the sleeve depicts love, marriage, pain and divorce, in addition to the scales of justice (equal). This lengthy album (originally a double vinyl) was poorly received by the critics, although now it has grown in stature, and it really does have considerable depth and melody. Let's face it, if Gaye sang a gardening seed catalogue from cover to cover it would be brilliant.
Additional Tracks
Recorded at Marvin Gaye Studio, Hollywood, California. HERE MY DEAR was originally released on Tamla (364) as a 2 LP set. Includes liner notes by David Ritz and Curtis M. Shaw.
Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Gordon Banks, Wali Ali (guitar); Ernie Fields (alto saxophone); Charles Owens, Fernando Harkness (tenor saxophone); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Frank Blair (bass); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Gary Jones, Elmira Colins (percussion).
Reissue producer: Cary E. Mansfield.
| | Sasha Invol2ver CD (2004)
Album songs
$19.79 Unlike dance mixes that are simply compilation CDs consisting of hits blended together in a continuous flow, DJ Sasha's INVOLVER is a mix that features both the artist's own music and exclusive tracks from other electronic artists. The resultant vibe is more like a traditional single-artist album than a collection of unrelated songs. In addition to the usual mixer and turntable techniques that form the basis of dance DJs' stock-in-trade, Sasha employs cutting-edge computer manipulation and a wide array of vintage synthesizers to blur the line between fully produced recordings and live improvisatory disc-spinning. Using his trademark trance aesthetic as a starting point, Sasha establishes a spare, cool-as-ice feel with a distinctly European flavor. He maintains this throughout, slowly building the tracks with the care of a painter, and ultimately delivering an album equally suited for the club or a post-party headphone session.
Personnel: Sasha (keyboards, drum programming); Charlie May, Leo Leite, Duncan Forbes, Barry Jamieson (keyboards, drum programming); Andrew Souter (synthesizer).
Audio Remixers: Charlie May; Leo Leite; Duncan Forbes; Sasha ; Barry Jamieson.

Album album
$26.29 2008 release. A host of collaborators joins DJ Andy Carthy (better known as Mr. Scruff) for Ninja Tuna, the fourth album in his canon. Guests include the likes of British Hip Hop legend Roots Manuva, Alice Russell and Will Holland of the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Ninja Tuna is the first record to be released on a collaborative label of the same name that sees Mr. Scruff and the Ninja Tune label working together closer than ever.
