In the 1990s, countless R&B acts incorporated hip-hop, but not many of them incorporated outright gangsta rap. Hip-hop-minded R&B artists -- who ranged from Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly and Lauryn Hill to Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and Aaron Hall -- steered clear of gangsta rap's violent, bloody imagery. But on two rare occasions, West Coast groups brought gangsta rap to R&B -- first was DRS in 1993, then came GAT in 1995. While GAT managed to bridge the gap between NWA and classic soul groups like the O'Jays, the Chi-Lites and the Dramatics, the equally obscure DRS (whose name stands for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) was coming from more of a new jack R&B perspective. If Babyface, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown or Prince had been singing the lyrics of NWA, Ice Cube, the Geto Boys or Ice-T, the results might have sounded something like Gangsta Lean. One of the high points of this overlooked CD is a cover of Prince's "Do Me, Baby," but much of the time, the Los Angeles quintet doesn't sing about love or romance -- it sings about gang violence, drug dealing, carjacking and other problems plaguing the inner city. Like Ice-T, 2Pac Shakur or Ice Cube, DRS embraces a first-person format and gives you the perspective of the gangbanger, the criminal or the thug -- which, of course, makes its violent accounts all the more disturbing. Gangsta Lean was among the most unique releases of 1993, but unfortunately, DRS' experimentation didn't pay off commercially. It does pay off creatively, however, making Gangsta Lean a gem that's worth searching for. ~ Alex Henderson

MAKE IT ROUGH One of the best and original albims of the whole 90's, totally blew me away! I was not expecting to hear what i did after listening to the single Gangster Lean, this has it all, great vocals, tight raps, and some x rated topics, but most of all the production was tight! A must album to own! Submitted by vikandtim (gloucester, england) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A GREAT CD FOR YOUR COLLECTION This is a great CD that you never get tired of. None of the songs are the same and you'll never get tired of this CD. A different message in each song and the boys can really sing. I will always love DRS. I also just recently found this CD again when I was moving and fell back in love. I really wish they could have done more because they are so talented, especially ejay! Submitted by Zoo (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Gangsta Lean album
$8.15 Where many of the soundtracks to movies about contemporary black culture tend to emphasize the new jack aspects of today's sounds, the songs which make up JASON'S LYRICS portray a much richer vision of inner city life.
That's because this tale of inner city brothers whose father has been killed--one caught up in the gangsta life, the other trying to stay on the straight and narrow--summons up a more complex web of human emotions and urban characters. Thus the range of music represented here, while steeped in the new jack conventions of modern hip-hop, establishes a solid set of connections with the foundation of modern black music: gospel, blues and soul.
Thus you have the spiritual epilogue of Oleta Adams' "Many Rivers To Cross," and the gospel-inflected overture of "U Will Know" by B.M.U., with its Southern soul groove, all-star contemporary cast and unyielding positivity. "If Trouble Was Money" (by Mint Condition and the late blues guitarist Albert Collins) and "This City Needs Help" ...

This 18-track compilation is missing a few songs that are on other Duprees anthologies, such as Ace's 31-track Their Complete Coed Masters, and even Rhino's 18-song The Best of the Duprees. Where this has a possible edge on the competition is the inclusion of three late-'60s songs from Heritage singles, where the other comps include only 1962-1964 Coed recordings. That's a small edge, since those late-'60s cuts are just average harmonized AM pop with a modernized doo wop tinge. If you're not fussy about having the complete Duprees Coed catalog, the other tracks on the CD cover that era -- which is the bread'n'butter of the group's discography -- satisfactorily, including the big hits "You Belong to Me," "My Own True Love," ...
| | Brian Mcknight U Turn CD (2003)
Gangsta Lean songs
$10.39 "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Brian McKnight may have made his name as a nice-guy balladeer unafraid of declaring Barry Manilow as a direct influence, but he still has a funkier side that's clearly evident on U TURN. Sporting a knit cap and shades on the cover that gives him an R.Kelly-meets-Maxwell kind of look, McKnight easily proves he can run with the big dogs by way of numerous celebrity collaborations. Nelly takes a break from the St. Lunatics to hop aboard the infectious "All Night Long," Fabolous and Six John throw down on the hard-edged title cut, and Kirk Franklin joins McKnight on the timely faith-during-wartime homily "One of The One's Who Did."
McKnight does make sure to include his share of trademark ...
