Standard Screen; Soundtrack English This rock documentary includes the complete concert performance of The Who at the third and final Isle of Wight music festival. Playing to 600,000 ravenous fans on August 30, 1970, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon outdid themselves with a towering set. They even went so far as to play the rock opera TOMMY in its entirety, giving audiences yet another reason to shout. Performing classic hits such as "I Can't Explain," "Summertime Blues," "My Generation," "Magic Bus," and many more, The Who further cemented their status as one of rock-and-roll's most thrilling live acts. While that year's Isle of Wight festival was marred by bad planning and even worse execution, there can be no denying the power of The Who's music. Murray Lerner's fascinating documentary captures a definitive moment in rock-and-roll history. Performance recorded: August 30, 1970

Out of order and edited - why?? What's here is fantastic - what's left out is puzzling, and why it's been done this way is frustrating. We already have a great 2CD set of the Isle of Wight show - powerful performances by The Who, including one of the most complete live performances of Tommy, and set in order of the way it was performed at the show -- that is, an opening salvo of five songs, including unreleased songs I Don't Even Know Myself and Water, then Tommy start to finish, then encores including Substitute, My Generation, Naked Eye, and Magic Bus. What we get on the DVD is out of order - all the non-Tommy material, including the encores, and then the Tommy section. Tommy is edited and does not include 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, and Keith Moon singing Tommy's Holiday Camp. It seems obvious to me that if the CD could be issued in order with all tracks then the DVD could be done the same way. The people who are going to buy it are going to be dedicated fans - it doesn't seem like the type of performance that will appeal to the casual listener. And, speaking on behalf of dedicated fans, I would prefer to have the entire show, in order, which to me would be the closest thing to being there - not a hodgepodge that is truncated. So, what's here is great - Keith's wild inventiveness, Pete's controlled fury, John's melodic thunder, and Roger's bravura showmanship - all together its even greater than its parts. But oh what could have been if the director / producer or whoever decided to edit and change the order didn't have an ego that was bigger than the creators of the performance. 2nd Issue a slight improvement This is the second time this legendary Who concert has been released on DVD. The picture quality is slightly cleaner than the previous disc, but the main improvement is in the sound mix- the biggest difference being Keith Moons drums which sound fuller with more impact. This is a DVD when everything comes together- excellent performance along with good sound and picture quality for the time (1970). Overall the Who's Isle of Wight performance is comparable to "Live at Leeds", in some ways I prefer it. This show was 6 months after the Leeds recording...which is commonly mentioned as being among the best live albums ever. The set list is similar to "Live at Leeds" with some new songs they did'nt play there. Would have liked to see the live version of "sparks" and some other songs which are on the CD of this show, but do not appear on the DVD. That aside this is a must own for any Who fan or film enthusiast of the classic rock era. As the other reviewers say, they are in their prime and very energetic- playing with an intensity and tightness that leaves no doubt as to why they were one of the best live acts in rock. At Isle of Wight The Who turn in one of the best filmed performances of this era I have seen....beyond belief really. Get this DVD and prepare to be blown away. The Who At Their Best 1970 is said to be their best live year
And the Isle of Wight is the proof.
This show is nothing but pure energy, and it is almost 3am when they go on.
Witness the greatest rock n roll in their prime Submitted by Jeff E (West Haven, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
The Who Live at the Isle of Wight Festival kicks A$$!!! The Who are as energetic as ever in one of the greatest performances of all time. This performance is comparable to Live at Leeds (which, in my opinion is the greatest live performance of all time.). You get to see Roger twirling his microphone, Pete windmilling on his Gibson SG (I suspect the same one used at Leeds.), Keith in all his glory attacking his Premier drums, and John just standing there in his skeleton costume laying down the musical foundation with searing bass leads, this is one of the greatest performances. Forget Woodstock, they were so stoned there they couldn't play worth crap. But this is SOOOOOO much better. BUY THIS DVD!!! YOU WILL WANT TO LEND IT TO EVERYONE!!!
