Soundtrack English; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re SONGWRITER is an amusing look at the country-western music business from the point of view of a popular singer-songwriter who splits up with his best friend and partner, as well as his wife, and gets himself involved with an unsavory manager who tries to steal his work.
This winning, amiable film stars Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson as longtime friends and stars of the Nashville music scene. When producer-songwriter Doc (Nelson) finds himself trapped in an exclusive contract with shifty exec Rodeo Rocky (Richard C. Sarafian), he comes up with a clever plan to break free, recruiting old pal Blackie Buck (Kristofferson) and an insecure, alcoholic torch singer named Gilda (Leslie Ann Warren) to help him.
Directed by Alan Rudolph, this is a real charmer of a film, featuring the perfectly cast team of Nelson and Kristofferson. The two share a great rapport and together wrote most of the film's songs, beauties all. Add Rip Torn as Gilda's unscrupulous manager and the film is a veritable Mount Rushmore of great craggy American faces. As a celebration of the joy, sorrow, and craft of songwriting, this warmhearted, funny film is a dusty gem that still sparkles. Filmed in Nashville, Tennessee, and Austin, Texas.
The film is in memory of Warner "Woody" Dalton.
Songwriter Quotes/Excerpts: "It's a short term loan on a long term lie. It's called 'high finance.'"--Doc (Willie Nelson) to Blackie (Kris Kristofferson)
"The only reason I drink is so people don't think I'm a dope fiend."--Blackie to Dino (Rip Torn)
"Do you suppose a man has to be a miserable son of a bitch all the time, just to write a good song now and then?"--Blackie to Doc
Songwriter Reviews: "...[Nelson and Kristofferson] declare war on the music business with SONGWRITER, and they very nearly win....Establishes the maverick directorial touch of [Rudolph]..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...A good natured film....Rip Torn does another superior job in a supporting role..."

I loved those days! The movie was great but I am a bit biased as I was friends of the gang back in the 80's. Woody Dalton was a dear friend, I was there when he passed. I sure miss the god ol days.

A timeless classic that carries on into the millenium The storyline can be compared to today's crunch between the music mogul and the business of entertainment. Nelson and Kristofferson bounce off each other like rain off concrete. Submitted by nicole_soto_norman (Nogales, Az, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.09 Extensive interview footage with members of prog rock giants Yes helps to tell their incredible story on this revealing documentary. Original members Jon Anderson and Chris Squire brought the group to life in the heady psychedelic days of late 1960s England, and they managed to survive numerous line-up changes, lawsuits, the onslaught of punk (which rendered prog rock deeply unfashionable), and a surprising rebirth as an MTV staple in the early '80s. Also included here is some incredible archive footage of the band's ostentatious stage shows and a collection of music videos.
Pakced with original music, rare, and never-before-seen photographs, this 2-DVD was collected from personal collections, performance archives, and music promos. Over 2 hours of extras include unseen footage of the band rehearsing, ...
