A behind-the-scenes look at the world of dance as seen through the eyes of a talented young dancer on the brink of success. Stars Neve Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, James Franoco; directed by Robert Altman. DVD special features include a "making-of: featurette, "Passion of Dance" featurette, audio commentary with Robert Altman and Neve Campbell. With THE COMPANY, maverick director Robert Altman brings his idiosyncratic vision to Chicago and the acclaimed Joffrey Ballet. Neve Campbell is Ry, an aspiring performer who gets her chance to shine when a fellow dancer is injured. Stepping into the spotlight, Ry finally reaches her true potential, impressing the company's artistic director Alberto Antonelli (Malcolm McDowell). As the company prepares for their performance of "Blue Snake," Ry finds herself falling in love with the good-natured, handsome chef Josh (James Franco). Meanwhile, backstage dramas continue to develop at an exhausting pace. Having studied ballet with the National Ballet of Canada, Campbell easily glides into her role, performing all of her own dance routines with the skill of a true professional.
Well known for his conscious debunking of myths and genres, Altman truly lets himself go this time around, delivering a jarringly understated film that is more documentary than drama. Cinematographer Andrew Dunne elegantly captures the many performance scenes on sweeping digital video. Adding even more beauty to the proceedings is the film's robust soundtrack, which features music from Van Dyke Parks, Julee Cruise, as well as several variations on the classic song "Funny Valentine" (Elvis Costello, Chet Baker, Marvin Laird, and Kronos Quartet). Theatrial Release: DECEMBER 25, 2003 (NY/LA) Company Reviews: "...It's a tour de force of editing and cinematography..."
-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life "...Altman's most amiable picture in years..."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere "With his shimmering THE COMPANY Robert Altman draws on his mastery of effortless-looking storytelling to celebrate the transcendent glories of the ballet."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "McDowell is a pleasure to watch, but the key to THE COMPANY is the quiet, focused rapture of Neve Campbell."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "[Campbell] plays the role with complete knowledge of Ry, and her dancing is always convincing."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "Altman turns THE COMPANY into a celebration of spirit, showing the gargantuan effort of many people to create an art that seems lighter than air."

$15.45 Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.
Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, ...

$10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. $10.29 Turning up the style and energy levels that he kept under a threshold with 1997's JACKIE BROWN, Tarantino's obvious glee and reverence for the underground kung fu action pictures of the '70s, and Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, makes for a stunning visual spectacle. Employing split screens, slow-motion, an anime sequence, and his trademark ultra-hip musical selections, Tarantino's film dares viewers to be unimpressed.
When her family is slaughtered on her wedding day, a bride swears revenge on her former boss and his assassins. Stars Uma Thurman, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Special features include behind-the-scenes.
After a six-year hiatus, Quentin Tarantino returns to the director's chair with KILL BILL. The movie proves once again that he is a hyperactive visionary and the master of cinematic coolness. Split into two volumes by Miramax in order to ensure that Tarantino's vision would not be compromised (and presumably to sell more tickets), KILL BILL: VOL. 1 tells the first half of the sprawling story, which is quite simple at first glance. A female assassin, referred to as "The Bride" (Uma Thurman), is attacked on her wedding day. Dead are her soon-to-be ...

$10.35 Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith.
Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a sensitive man with little use for many words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Renée Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding ...

$14.55 This World War I mystery finds limitless beauty in the nostalgia of loss. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, whose whimsical AMELIE riveted audiences, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT also stars Audrey Tautou--the 21st century's Audrey Hepburn--in the stubbornly emotional role of a widow in denial. Here she is Mathilde, a waifish young woman with a pronounced limp from childhood polio. Living with her quirky aunt and uncle in a farmhouse by the sea, and waiting desperately for her fiance Manech (Gaspard Ulliel) to return from the war, she believes that if he were truly lost she would feel it in her heart. Thus, when the bad news arrives--Manech and five fellow soldiers were exiled to No Man's Land for shooting off their own fingers in hope of being discharged--Mathilde refuses to believe he is dead. Instead, she begins her own investigation into Manech's infantry, hiring a private detective and tracking down the wives and girlfriends of each of Manech's compatriots. Conducting countless interviews, Mathilde pieces together Manech's war stories--which are told in earthshaking flashbacks involving gruesome explosions, flying guts, and massive suffering. And yet, the all-in-this-together humanity of these awful scenes, and the heartfelt bravery with which Mathilde absorbs the details of each battle, is undeniably moving. Jodie Foster appears as Elodie, one of the widows, ...

$8.95 Released a little over a year after the grand success of his Oscar-winning feature MYSTIC RIVER, Clint Eastwood returns to the director's chair for MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Eastwood also stars, in the role of Frankie Dunn, a down-on-his-luck former boxing manager who spends the twilight years of his life running a small, dilapidated gym in downtown Los Angeles. Frankie's previous career was blighted by an injury to one of his prize fighters, Scrap (Morgan Freeman), who lost the sight in his right eye during a particularly brutal bout; Scrap now wiles away the hours working as a cleaner in Frankie's gym. Wary of similar occurrences being inflicted on the prestigious young talent that passes before him, Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. But when the brash, confident young boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) strides into the gym, Frankie's life is irretrievably altered. Initially refusing to train Maggie due to her gender and age, Frankie relents when faced with her tenacity, spirit, and burning ambition. The combination of Maggie's talent and Frankie's tutelage paves the way for the adroit fighter to rise steadily through the ranks of women's boxing, with the unlikely coupling forming a genuinely touching bond in the process.
Clint Eastwood has crafted a ...

$75.59 When the motion picture camera was invented, early practitioners were filled with a sense of the limitless possibilities of this amazing mechanism. With its ability to mimetically reproduce reality, as well as its potential for the manipulation of images as well as time and space, the movie camera was truly a tool of progress and hope. Those who produced some of the most inventive and experimental short films of the time went on to make it big in Hollywood, but their earliest work contains a rebellious spirit that is lacking in their later studio pictures. These incredible films, by luminaries including savant Orson Welles, Russian montage maestro Sergei Eisenstein, ...
