A look at boxer Muhammad Ali from his early days in the ring. Stars Will Smith, directed by Michael Mann. DVD special features include director's commentary, documentary and newly released footage. Michael Mann's ALI manages to be an informative look at the career of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and an entertaining and moving portrait of the man. The action begins with the brash young Cassius Clay's surprising victory over Sonny Liston. The film depicts Clay's conversion to Islam, his partnership with "Bundini" Brown (Jamie Foxx in a wonderfully complex turn), his friendship with Howard Cosell (a transformed Jon Voight), his principled refusal to serve in the military during Vietnam, and his subsequent problems with the law and the boxing commission. The film concludes with Ali's battle with George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle."
Will Smith delivers a worthy performance, transforming his body, face, and voice to capture the spirit of the charismatic fighter. The work of the supporting cast is superb, including Smith's real-life wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Marvin Gaye's daughter, Nona Gaye, as the women in Ali's life. Mann brings the viewer in close to the boxing action, effectively depicting Ali's unique grace and quickness, and the violent frenzy of the sport. The film shows the familiar public figure of fights and press conferences, and also gives a glimpse of the quiet, thoughtful private life of Ali. Ali Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) IN THE RING WITH MICHAEL MANN KEVIN LUCERO LESS - PROFESSOR OF CINEMA TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART SCHOOL. IN THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF MICHAEL MANN'S "ALI" THE VIEWER SHOULD NOTICE THAT THIS IS NO ORDINARY FILM MAKER. WITH "MILLION DOLLAR BABY" AND "CINDERELLA MAN" THE BOXING FILM CAN BE SEEN AS SMART AND HISTORICAL, BUT WITH "ALI" IT CAN BE SEEN AS BEAUTIFUL. MISE EN SCENE IS THE CINEMATIC TERM FOR THE COMPOSITION OF THE FRAME. THIS FILM LOOKS SO GOOD THAT MANY MIGHT SAY IT CAN'T BE GOOD, BUT IT IS. MANN'S ATTENTION FOR EVERY DETAIL TAKES YOU THERE AND EVEN GETS A SPOT ON PERFORMANCE FROM MR. SMITH. NOT MANY DIRECTORS CAN TAKE A STORY THIS LARGE AND GIVE IT THE RESPECT IT HOLDS FOR SO MANY SPORTS FANS. SMART, HISTORICAL AND BEAUTIFUL "ALI" EARNS IT'S OSCAR NOMINATIONS KO. A movie without structure This movie should've been alot better because it had all the pieces of the puzzle to be a great movie. It had a perfect cast that included Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, but even a solid group of leading men can't overcome a storyline that is full of holes. The story jumps back and forth and it assumes that you already know what is going on.Ali could've no it should've been alot better. $9.69 Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and her younger sister, Alice (Jodhi May), both recent arrivals to the colonies, are being escorted to their father, Colonel Munro (Maurice Roeves), by a troop of British soldiers. Along the way they are ambushed by a Huron war party led by Magua (Wes Studi), a sinister warrior with a blood vendetta against Munro. Munro's soldiers are wiped out and Cora herself is nearly killed by Magua but is saved at the last moment by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), a white trapper raised by the Mohican tribe. Hawkeye promises to take Cora and her sister safely to their father, and along the way Cora and the intense Hawkeye fall in love. Together they must survive wilderness, war, and the relentless pursuit of Magua.
Returning to the theme of a great love threatened by overwhelming circumstances, director Michael Mann hits the mark with an adaptation that captures the essence of the book and its historical details perfectly. Day-Lewis and Stowe are beautiful to watch, delivering moving performances as two people trying to hold on to each other in times of war. In addition, the Native American political activist Russell Means makes an oustanding film debut as Chingachgook, Hawkeye's adopted father and last of the Mohicans.

$10.29 The follow-up to his 2003 horror hit HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, Rob Zombie's THE DEVIL'S REJECTS continues the story of a bizarre group of very odd people who like to torture, maim, and kill virtually everyone they come in contact with. When Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) pays a visit to the body-ridden lair of Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook, taking over the role played by Karen Black in the first film), her children Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) are forced to run, eventually holing up in a roadside motel with four hostages (including Clint Eastwood regular Geoffrey Lewis and THREE'S COMPANY star Priscilla Barnes). Seeking help from creepy clown Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), they continue their murderous rampage while being tracked by Wydell, who is hellbent on avenging the death of his brother, which came at the hands of this very weird and dangerous family. As Wydell tortures Mother Firefly for answers, Otis and Baby torture their hostages for kicks. Zombie, a heavy metal musician who leads the group White Zombie, infuses his exciting, funny, and terrifying gorefest with a fabulous 1970s soundtrack, using such songs as Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" and David Essex's "Rock On" at inappropriately riotous moments. Part BONNIE AND CLYDE, part THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, part THE WILD BUNCH, Zombie's bloody barrage is filled with unexpected plot twists and surprises unique to this genre.
From the visionary mind of acclaimed musician Rob Zombie comes this film, the gritty follow-up to Zombie's smash horror hit, House of 1000 Corpses. $22.79 THE ONE is based on the futuristic premise that there is more than one universe: there are many parallel universes, each of which contain a slightly different version of every person who has ever lived. Yulaw (Jet Li) is a rogue agent from the Multiverse Bureau of Intelligence who has learned that, by traveling from one parallel universe to another and killing the alternate versions of himself, he gains his counterparts's strength, speed and intelligence. After killing one hundred and twenty-three parallel versions of himself, Yulaw has gained almost unstoppable power--and there is only one version of himself left, Gabriel Law (Jet Li), a Los Angeles cop. $7.09 A spiritual journey takes a strange and disturbing turn in this drama from Mexican filmmaker Rodrigo Pla. In 1928, Mexico is in a state of political overthrow, with government forces reacting with savage violence against anyone they imagine may harbor revolutionary sympathies. After Elias (Mario Zaragoza) and his wife become parents of a baby boy, their attempt to travel into town to have the child baptized is mistaken for the advance of rebel troops, and soon their village is razed by military police. As Elias and his family run for their lives, he is visited by a vision of the Lord, who condemns him for putting his children and neighbors in harm's way, and Elias is convinced he must atone. Elias leads his family into the desert and he begins building a church, convinced this is the only way he can redeem his family in the eyes of God. But it soon becomes obvious Elias's children do not share his convictions, and the father's devotion begins to resemble madness. DESIERTO ADENTRO (aka THE DESERT WITHIN) was an official selection at the 2008 Guadalajara Film Festival.
