This 1997 release by indie rockers Reef features "Place Your Hands," "Summer's In Bloom," and "Higher Vibration."
With their second album Glow, Reef refused to change direction at all, even hiring Black Crowes producer George Drakoulias to work on the record. While Glow is essentially the same batch of Stones/Faces riffs and hoarse, soulful singing, it is more focused and better than its predecessor, and while it isn't particularly original, it is inspired. A handful of songs, particularly singles like "Place Your Hands" and "Consideration," are terrific, even if they are a bit too "classic" for their own good. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
1997 debut album for Sony. Out-of-print domestically.
Reef: Gary Stringer (vocals); Kenwyn House (guitar); Benmont Tench (keyboards); Jack Bessant (bass); Dominic Greensmith (drums).
Additional Personnel: Chris Trujillo (percussion); Glorious Choir.
Entertainment Weekly (7/18/97, p.84) - "...this young British band unabashedly wallows in the blues-based sound of early-'70s hard rock....Reef's heartfelt traditionalism should more than satisfy those who hunger for freshly manufactured classic rock." - Rating: B Q (1/98, p.114) - Included in Q Magazine's "50 Best Albums of 1997." Q (3/01, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Fantastically overblown and exaggerated....Their star truly shone....Everything's bigger. Choruses, riffs, grooves and Gary Stringer's ludicrous impersonation of a rock singer..." Glow Review

| | Justin Bieber My World CD (2009) Enhanced CD
Glow music CDs
$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given the comfort level he showed in the material he covered, My World plays it straight, based on the kind of age-appropriate content that would fill out a release from a younger Chris Brown or a junior version of Ne-Yo. Members of the Clutch, Midi Mafia, "Tricky" ...
| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Glow songs
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel ...
| | Rod Stewart Never A Dull Moment (Gold) CD (1972) Gold
Glow album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up.
Most notable is a collaboration with Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an ...
| | Sting If On A Winter's Night... CDs (2009) Digipak
Glow CD music
$14.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by ...
| | Alejandro Escovedo Bourbonitis Blues CD (1999)
Glow music CDs
$10.79 Alejandro Escovedo has an impressive resume: he was a member of one of the first San Francisco punk bands, the Nuns, and was in one of the early country-punk bands, Rank & File, as well as the under-rated Austin roots-rockers the True Believers. He's related to both Pete Escovedo and Sheila E, and on his WITH THESE HANDS (Rykodisc) album, his backup included Willie Nelson and Jennifer Warnes. On BOURBONITIS BLUES, he mixes evocative originals ("I Was Drunk," "Sacramento & Polk") with well-chosen and unusual covers (John Cale's "Amsterdam," a tantalizingly slow take on the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," Ian Hunter's "Irene Wilde") to show his scope as an artist.
Escovedo shows a rare grasp of rock & roll history, and the blues and country roots it sprang from. Moreover, he doesn't merely rehash/recycle the past, he builds on it. His originals are thoughtful and intensely personal but never self-absorbed, and they rock with a controlled passion that recalls the Rolling Stones in their early 1970s prime. Alejandro Escovedo proves that late-night raunch can be put across with sensitivity (the instrumentation includes cello and pedal steel guitar) and quiet, introspective songs can have a sharp, hidden edge.
Recorded at Modern Recordings, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Bassett Sound, Austin, Texas; and live at FitzGerald's, Berwyn, Illinois.
Personnel: Alejandro Escovedo (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jon Langford (vocals, acoustic guitar); Kelly Hogan (vocals); Chris Stamey (guitar, harmonium); Joe Eddy Hines ...
