Slim & Slam, one of the finest and most famous of jive groups during the '40s, have seen their Columbia catalog reissued several times previous to this, via complete (or nearly complete) sets on Affinity and Tax. The Definitive set, Complete Columbia Master Takes, is an excellent addition to the discography since it ignores alternate takes (the bane of music fans, if not collectors) and simply presents every side released by the two-man tandem of Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart. Over three discs, the set illustrates how the duo arrived fully formed -- "The Flat Foot Floogie," their first hit, is their artistic peak -- and merely refined their talents during their four years together (before World War II drove them apart). Three discs is simply too much for an introduction to the Slim & Slam phenomenon, but the rarities impress much more than they embarrass; for every silly novelty like "Vol Vist du Gaily Star," there's a priceless addition to the jazz canon like "Bongo." ~ John Bush
