There are only a handful of instruments -- the cello being the most often used -- that can be multiplied into a satisfying, self-contained orchestra, and Slide Hampton occasionally proves that the trombone can be added to that short list. This get-together, recorded live in Pittsburgh (with all proceeds going to the jazz program at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, an arts and learning center for minorities), marked the first time in over 20 years that Hampton had recorded with his World of Trombones ensemble (though they have gigged in the interim). Expanding his forces from nine to 13 horns, including four bass trombones and his own horn, plus a four-piece rhythm section, Hampton conjures a fine, mellow, robust set of textures, yet not without the trademark edgy dissonances that give his sound a distinctive tang (as in the almost sinister, bass-grounded "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing"). ...

A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth. Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time ...
Rhythm Of The Soul
Dave Weckl Rhythm Of The Soul CD  (1998)

Savoy & Prestige Recordings music CDs
CD $9.75  5 stars Audio Samples
Toss into the musical blender the spirits of Stevie Wonder, Crusaders, Van Halen, Sting, Dr. John, and Chick Corea; turn on the fire, low for easy simmering blues-rock at times, high for a fiery intensity that busts the borders between R&B and fusion. The result: the Dave Weckl Band's hard-to-categorize adventure, Rhythm of the Soul. Here, he celebrates his liberation from Corea's Elektric fold with a vengeance. The ensemble ventures into a variety of decades: the 70s, with Steve Tavaglione blowing percussive sax over Buzz Feiten's wah-wah over Jay Oliver's ...
