Murail: Gondwana, Desintegrations, Etc
$14.29 This may be composer John Adams's most ambitious undertaking to date, one that moves him further out of the "minimalist" category. A massive, sprawling opus, it bombards the listener with a dizzying array of swirling melodies, chugging rhythms, vivid sonic colors, and lush orchestral textures. Yet for all its complexity, this three-movement work never overwhelms the ear. Adams makes the work emotionally compelling by creating a variety of moods that sometimes blend smoothly and at other times collide with a clamor.
Poignant melodies churn and percolate until they explode into raucous climaxes; jubilant fanfares crash into craggy dissonance; motifs that dance and spin as if out of control somehow resolve into peaceful reveries. It all makes for a gripping study of struggle and contrast and an adventurous journey through ever-changing soundscapes. Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, to whom this work is dedicated, leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an assured performance that crackles with excitement. The accompanying booklet includes an excellent essay by fellow composer Ingram Marshall providing valuable insight and perspective. Kudos to Adams for creating a provocative yet accessible work that challenges listeners without a hint of intimidation.

$14.35 | | Kurt Elling Man In The Air CD (2003)
Murail: Gondwana, Desintegrations, Etc
$13.45 MAN IN THE AIR was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
One of the most distinctive, forward-looking vocalists in contemporary jazz, Kurt Elling is clearly inspired by the likes of Jon Hendricks and Mark Murphy, but assimilates those influences into a strikingly unique style. Though he's done his share of standards as well as albums of original material, Elling strikes an interesting balance on MAN IN THE AIR by writing his own lyrics based around pre-existing jazz tunes (a technique pioneered by Hendricks). His spiritual/philosophical bent is apparent in many of lyrics, but they're wrapped so organically around the tunes that the seams never show.
Never a belter, Elling prefers a more intimate, communicative method, seeming to pull the notes from somewhere deep inside himself and deliver them directly to the listener with little ado. He forsakes the tropes of many scat-oriented jazz singers, though he's a strong hand at improvisation. He's also eclectic enough to dip onto the Coltrane songbook one moment and to revamp the 1960s pop classic "Never My Love" the next. Backed by a trio that's tuned in enough to match his every subtle move (and bolstered by some stellar guests), Elling pursues his singular vision with a winning combination of passion and virtuosity.
